HDR is seeking a dynamic Power Market Sector Lead for Canada to drive growth across multiple practices and technical innovations. This key role involves staff and program management, building national teams, and supporting business development for a diverse range of power projects and clients. You will leverage HDR's recognition as a Top 20 Power sector firm by Engineering News Record, working with over 1,000 professionals experienced in transmission and distribution design, power generation, hydropower, and environmental services.Key Responsibilities
The Power Market Sector Leader will utilize their expertise in power generation, delivery, hydropower, or comparable fields, coupled with a seller/doer mindset, to expand services for power utilities, energy developers, and industrial clients. Primary duties include:- Leading program growth with a focus on client development and market diversification.
- Recruiting and developing talent to meet project and program needs.
- Collaborating with local, regional, and national leaders to guide the Canadian Power program's growth and operational expectations.
- Overseeing program management, project management, delivery design, quality management, client relationships, and opportunity identification.
- Working with multi-disciplinary teams to create high-quality power design solutions for generation, delivery, hydropower, renewables, data centers, and industrial clients in Canada.
- Collaborating with US and UK power teams and other HDR business groups to meet regional regulatory requirements and deliver world-class services.
- Leading the design, planning, management, permitting, and delivery of power generation, power delivery, hydropower, renewable energy projects, and business continuity/resiliency components.
Specific Duties Include:
- Program management for power generation, power delivery, hydropower, and renewable energy clients, including support for technology, data center, and industrial clients.
- Developing and managing strategic marketing programs and client relationships.
- Acting as a Senior Project Manager or Senior Engineer (seller-doer).
- Building and supervising teams of engineers and designers across Canada, overseeing workload, quality, training, and performance reviews.
- Collaborating with marketing and client leaders to enhance existing client relationships, with a focus on power delivery and generation.
- Utilizing knowledge of utility frameworks, design standards, and project delivery models to scope new project opportunities.
- Applying experience with power delivery procurement and construction best practices in Canada.
- Leveraging staff for engineering execution and ensuring world-class design quality.
- Supporting Business Groups in delivering complex power delivery solutions.
- Developing relationships and agreements with regional teaming partners.
- Managing projects from scope development to closeout, including quality, schedule, and budget control.
- Leading risk management activities.
- Directing technical messaging and professional engagement at industry events.
- Establishing direction and growth strategies for the Market Sector.
- Managing existing staff, identifying future needs, and leading recruitment efforts.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering, planning, or a related field.
- A minimum of 10 years of industry experience.
- Proven experience in developing and managing strategic marketing programs and client relationships.
- Experience in overall staff development, including recruiting and professional growth.
- Demonstrated commitment to HDR values and an active participant in our employee-owned culture.
- Ability to work cooperatively with various HDR leadership roles.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A minimum of 4 years of substation and/or transmission design, or 4+ years of power generation design.
- 2 years of project management, site inspections, or Engineer of Record roles.
- Professional Engineer designation in Canada (or equivalent, with expectation to obtain Canadian designation).
- Experience with both traditional and alternative procurement delivery models.
- Strong leadership, staff management, and program management experience with national remote teams.
- Understanding of contractual risk and mitigation strategies.
- Risk identification and management experience related to power delivery regulatory approvals and design.
