Field Industrial Electrician
Location: Smyrna, TN
Travel: 50% nationwide, typically 1-4 weeks at a time
Pay: $30-35 per hour
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Industrial Electrician to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and commission electrical systems in an OEM manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate will ensure reliable, safe operation of production equipment and facility systems by working on control panels, PLCs, automation systems, and network and fiber cabling. This role requires strong knowledge of electrical schematics, NEC/NFPA/UL standards, and OSHA safety practices, along with the ability to integrate systems and collaborate with maintenance, engineering, and vendors to minimize downtime and support continuous production.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial electrical systems, motors, drives, sensors, and associated equipment in a manufacturing setting.
- Install, wire, and commission control panels, I/O components, relays, contactors, motor starters, and associated control devices.
- Program, diagnose, and support PLCs and automation systems in coordination with automation engineers; perform routine logic checks and firmware updates as required.
- Read, interpret, and work from electrical schematics, control diagrams, blueprints, and wiring layouts to execute repairs and new installations accurately.
- Perform system integration tasks to connect new equipment to plant networks, PLCs, SCADA, and safety systems ensuring proper communication and interoperability.
- Terminate and test fiber optics and network cabling; troubleshoot communication issues between devices and networked control systems.
- Perform preventative maintenance tasks and inspections, maintain accurate maintenance records, and recommend spare parts and upgrades to improve equipment reliability.
- Ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA, UL, and OSHA electrical safety standards; participate in lockout/tagout and other safety programs.
- Coordinate with OEM vendors, contractors, and engineering teams during installations, upgrades, and major repairs to maintain project schedules and documentation.
- Use diagnostic tools and meters to measure voltage, current, continuity, and other electrical parameters; identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by recommending and implementing control enhancements, retrofit solutions, and energy-saving measures.
- Provide on-call support and respond to emergency shutdowns or failures as needed to restore production quickly and safely.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of hands-on industrial electrical maintenance experience in manufacturing or heavy industrial environments.
- Proven experience with PLCs and automation system (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar), including basic programming and troubleshooting.
- Strong ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control diagrams, blueprints, and wiring layouts.
- Knowledge of NEC, NFPA, and UL standards and demonstrated adherence to OSHA safety practices and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Experience with control panel wiring, I/O components, motor controls, VFDs, and industrial sensors.
- Familiarity with fiber optics, structured network cabling, and industrial network communication protocols for system integration.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a cross-functional team.
- Effective communication skills for documenting work, preparing reports, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
