Electrician Lead
The Electrician Leader is located at the Syracuse VA Medical Center, a tertiary care facility providing a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology, as well as education and research programs. The Syracuse VA Medical Center consists of the main facility, VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Binghamton and Rome, and six contract clinics in Auburn, Cortland, Ithaca, Massena, Oswego, and Watertown.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Duties
As an Electrician Lead, you will be responsible for leading the work of seven WG-10 Electricians. Your duties will encompass installing, modifying, and repairing electrical power circuits, including troubleshooting, repairing, and testing electrical power equipment, circuits, and controls. The voltages encountered range from 13-200 Volts A.C. primary down to 12 Volts D.C. control voltage. You will utilize skills and knowledge with distribution panels, switchgear, control circuitry, and fire alarm detection and warning systems. Specific tasks include installing light fixtures, fluorescent fixtures, switches, outlets, exhaust fans, nurse call systems, motor relays, motor controls, dimmer switches, fire alarm systems, and electrical controls for equipment. You will also install necessary conduit and boxes for complete telephone installations, install complete distribution panels and circuit breakers, and check generators and transfer switches for proper operation. When necessary, you will create 2237's for service or new parts.
You will work in the Electrical Shop Section and closely with other tradespeople from other shops on all 'in-house' projects. Duties include demolition work, channeling and patching walls, removing dead or abandoned lines (both electrical and plumbing), and assisting all trades to the completion of projects. You will make routine trips to Rome CBOC for repairs, inspections, and scheduled maintenance and cleaning. Your duties involve work to repair, maintain, and operate utility systems, including making complex and major repairs to large utility systems. You will troubleshoot unusual malfunctions in advanced equipment and systems using numerous testing techniques and equipment. This includes making visual, audible, and mechanical checks for proper temperatures, operation of different parts of the cycle, oil levels, unusual noises, overheated bearings, loose connections, faulty insulation, frayed or loose belts, gaskets, and pulleys.
You will be available for emergency calls due to fire, flood, inclement weather, and utility breakdowns. Your work schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm.
Physical Requirements
Work requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring positions. You will frequently lift and carry tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 20 pounds, and occasionally up to 40 pounds. Moderately heavy objects over 40 pounds may be lifted or moved with assistance.
Working Conditions
Work is performed both inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather. Work areas can be noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy. You may work on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 feet or more, and in close quarters such as manholes or attics. There is a possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices, as well as cuts and bruises.
