Environmental Qualification & Design Engineer

Join Zone 5 Technologies, located in San Luis Obispo, CA, where innovation drives advancements in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The role focuses on environmental testing, validation, and design integration of advanced counter-drone and missile systems for U.S. Department of Defense programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute detailed environmental test plans per MIL-STD-810.
  • Collaborate with design teams to integrate test insights into hardware design.
  • Translate qualification needs into early-phase design guidelines.
  • Conduct testing in various conditions: shock, vibration, temperature, and more.
  • Coordinate EMI/EMC testing with internal and external teams.
  • Lead planning for test setup including harnessing and instrumentation.
  • Serve as the technical interface for third-party test houses.
  • Apply expertise in missile systems and counter-UAS platforms for effective test planning.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • 12–15 years of experience in aerospace, defense, or high-reliability systems engineering.
  • Hands-on expertise in MIL-STD-810, with familiarity of DO-160 and related standards.
  • Proven skills in root cause failure analysis and design integration.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical and electrical systems under extreme conditions.
  • Experience with test instrumentation and data acquisition tools.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with internal teams and external partners.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $170,000 - $205,000 USD.
