About the Role
This position at Yahoo is for a Data Engineer with a strong focus on semantic analytics, AI-assisted querying, and natural language interfaces over large-scale data systems. You will start in a customer-facing analytics role and gradually take on backend responsibilities, contributing to modern data access systems.
About Yahoo Consumer Data Team
The team manages a petabyte-scale data ecosystem powering insights across Yahoo’s media products. They are evolving access to data by implementing semantic analytics and natural language-driven insights that directly influence product strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with internal stakeholders to translate business questions into actionable insights.
- Utilize semantic analytics frameworks and cloud data services like BigQuery.
- Develop, test, and optimize SQL queries and semantic models.
- Contribute to metadata layers, data dictionaries, and query abstractions.
- Support AI-assisted analytics workflows involving tools like Claude, Copilot, and Cursor.
- Monitor data accuracy, performance, and reliability across pipelines.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to enhance backend systems for semantic queries.
- Automate reporting with modern BI and AI-enhanced tools.
- Troubleshoot query performance issues and improve cost efficiency.
- Stay current on best practices in AI-driven analytics and cloud data infrastructure.
Qualifications
- BS in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Strong interest in AI-driven analytics and semantic data layers.
- Familiarity with SQL and cloud data warehouses such as BigQuery.
- Understanding of data modeling and structured analytics workflows.
- Exposure to AI-assisted development tools like Claude or GitHub Copilot.
- Strong analytical and communication skills for stakeholder engagement.
- Curiosity to evolve from analytics support to backend engineering.
