Job Description

Assistant Engineer - Sustainable Drainage

Are you passionate about improving urban drainage and integrating sustainable practices? WSP in India is seeking an Assistant Engineer to join our dynamic team, working on innovative solutions for surface water management. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to projects of national importance, learn from experienced professionals, and grow your career in blue-green infrastructure.

About the Role

As an Assistant Engineer, you will be an integral part of our Blue Green Infrastructure team, collaborating with colleagues across India and the UK. You will provide technical input on complex surface water issues, primarily focusing on Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) and blue-green infrastructure. This role goes beyond traditional drainage design, emphasizing creativity, problem-solving, and integration with urban design and placemaking. You will support the development of engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed design and construction, produce high-quality technical outputs, and contribute to the learning and growth of the wider team. You will also have opportunities to promote the WSP brand and its expertise in industry forums.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical input on urban drainage projects, with a focus on SuDS and blue-green infrastructure.
  • Engage in bespoke, challenging projects requiring creative problem-solving, not just standard drainage design.
  • Produce high-quality technical outputs, including reports, drawings, specifications, and schedules.
  • Support the development of engineering solutions, from feasibility studies to detailed design and construction.
  • Contribute to team learning through knowledge sharing.
  • Promote the WSP brand through industry forums and conferences.
  • Contribute to multi-disciplinary public realm improvement schemes and large-scale SuDS retrofit projects.
  • Produce engineering designs for urban drainage projects for various clients.
  • Work on complex, high-profile projects, including SuDS and urban design.
  • Assist local authorities in flood prevention initiatives.
  • Help develop fee proposals and win new work.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or an equivalent analytical science subject (e.g., environmental engineering, construction, environmental science, geography).
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, urban drainage design.
  • Understanding or experience with hydraulic modelling software (e.g., InfoWorks, InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage, Flow).
  • Competence with AutoCAD; Civil 3D experience is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, MapInfo).
  • High degree of computer literacy and strong teamwork skills.
  • Genuine interest in improving stormwater management through blue-green infrastructure.
  • Desire to create better places for people and the environment.
