Assistant Consultant Archaeology

WSP is seeking an Assistant Consultant in Archaeology to support our UK Cultural Heritage & Archaeology (CH&A) Team. This role is crucial for the development of our growing CH&A Team in Noida, Mumbai, or Bengaluru, which supports the UK Team. The position requires a combination of technical expertise and knowledge of archaeology and heritage.

About the Role

The WSP UK Cultural Heritage and Archaeology team is the largest heritage consultancy in the UK, working across the UK and occasionally overseas. We cover all aspects of the historic environment, including archaeology, built heritage, setting, and design, throughout the full project lifecycle. Our team provides expert advice on a wide range of heritage-related inquiries, managing change in the historic environment. We work on high-profile, large-scale infrastructure projects both domestically and internationally as part of multi-disciplinary teams, aiming for high-quality output and contributing to innovative approaches within the heritage sector.

The successful applicant will join a team of data handling professionals within the WSP iCRC UK Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Team. You will be responsible for delivering the highest standards of technical work and contributing to the continued success of the cultural heritage business through client-focused project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handling, sorting, and preparation of data sets.
  • Preparation of cultural heritage cartography, including plans to show heritage assets.
  • Researching archaeological and historic environment baselines from online resources.
  • Supporting the production of cultural heritage reports, such as Historic Environment Desk-Based Assessments and Heritage Statements.
  • Managing, interpreting, and manipulating large data sets.
  • Purchasing and maintaining datasets, including Ordnance Survey Mapping and non-publicly available data, adhering to third-party licensing agreements.
  • Actively promoting knowledge sharing inclusively, developing working relationships across WSP, and gaining internal clients.
  • Generating figures for inclusion in publications and public consultations.
  • Providing detailed information to assist in meeting legal licensing requirements.
  • Supporting marketing and bidding efforts with relevant material.

Key Competencies / Skills

Mandatory Skills
  • Experience in handling and managing data sets for analysis.
  • Proficiency in GIS software and techniques (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word.
  • Strong teamwork, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Good written and spoken English proficiency, essential for technical report writing.
  • Confident and highly motivated with strong communication skills, capable of working independently and collaboratively.
  • Basic general understanding of British archaeology (prehistoric to modern periods) and a willingness to expand this knowledge.
Desirable Skills
  • Experience in Cultural Heritage Consultancy or working in archaeology/built heritage conservation.
  • Database management experience.
  • Experience with CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator, and AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with Google Maps, Google Earth Professional, Photoshop, or similar image editing software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Applications other than Word.

Qualifications

  • An appropriate academic qualification in archaeology, heritage, data handling, or a related discipline.
