Job Description
Trustee at Working Well Trust
We are seeking new trustees to join our Board of Trustees, following a period of growth. We are looking for people with an interest in our work and/or have professional experience in the financial sector, legal sector and IT/data security.
What difference will you make?
Becoming a Trustee of the Working Well Trust offers a meaningful opportunity to shape an organisation that is dedicated to improving the lives, confidence, and wellbeing of people who have lived experience of mental health, who are neurodiverse or who are facing other challenges affecting their employment goals. As a Trustee, you play a vital role in strengthening the Trust’s ability to deliver high‑quality, person‑centred support across all of our services.
Trustees bring strategic oversight, professional insight, and lived experience that help ensure our services remain responsive to the needs of the communities we serve. By guiding the Trust’s long‑term direction, safeguarding its values, and ensuring strong governance, Trustees enable the organisation to be in the best position to continue delivering services.
Your leadership as a Trustee can help the Working Well Trust:
- Grow our impact by shaping innovative programmes that improve wellbeing and remove barriers to employment, learning, and recovery.
- Maintain robust governance so the organisation remains financially sustainable, accountable, and focused on the people we support.
- Build partnerships and visibility that open doors to new collaborations, funding streams, and ways to reach those who need us most.
- Champion the importance of employment support and ensure our services reflect the diverse needs and strengths of our community.
By joining the Board, you will contribute directly to the long‑term wellbeing of individuals who rely on our support and to the growth of an organisation that believes in potential, possibility, and recovery.
What are we looking for?
Digital/IT skills
A Trustee with strong digital and/or IT skills will help Working Well operate efficiently, innovate confidently, and increase our understanding of this fast changing environment. You should bring a solid understanding of digital strategy, data management, and the effective use of technology to support organisational goals. This includes the ability to evaluate digital tools, oversee cybersecurity risks, and ensure systems are robust, secure, and fit for purpose.
You should feel confident interpreting digital performance metrics and be comfortable advising on the adoption of new platforms.
Alongside the wider board and senior leadership, the Trustee will help embed good digital governance—promoting responsible data handling, safeguarding online information, and encouraging a culture of digital confidence and innovation across the organisation.
Finance skills
A Trustee with strong finance skills will help Working Well remain financially healthy, compliant, and sustainable. You should bring a solid understanding of financial management, ideally within the charity or voluntary sector, enabling you to interpret financial reports and support strategic decision‑making. Confidence in scrutinising budgets, cashflow forecasts, and risk registers is essential, as is the ability to ask constructive, challenging questions to ensure resources are used effectively and responsibly.
You must also understand their legal and regulatory responsibilities, including oversight of annual accounts, audit processes, and financial controls. You, along with the Treasurer will translate complex financial information to support the wider board, fostering good governance and long‑term planning.
Legal skills
A Trustee with strong legal skills will help Working Well navigate its regulatory landscape, manage risk, and maintain high standards of governance. You will bring a solid understanding of charity law, governance requirements, and the legal duties of Trustees, ensuring the organisation operates within its constitutional and statutory frameworks. This includes the ability to interpret legal documents, assess contractual obligations, and identify potential areas of legal exposure.
They should feel confident advising the board on matters such as data protection, employment law, safeguarding, and compliance with fundraising and company regulations. The role also involves supporting risk management processes, helping develop robust policies, and providing constructive challenge to ensure decisions are informed and responsible.
Working closely with the Chair, CEO, and fellow Trustees, the legal Trustee will promote a culture of accountability and transparency, helping the organisation anticipate emerging legal issues and plan for long‑term sustainability.
We welcome candidates with lived experience of mental health or who are neurodiverse, and candidates who live or work in the areas we operate in.
What will you be doing?
The Working Well Trust board is currently made up of people from the private sector including banking, finance, digital media and people & culture. We want to broaden the range of skills and experience on the Board to help the Trust move forward following a couple of years of growth.
Over the next year we will be looking at how we build on our successes including maintaining the high standard of our services, develop new ways of working and look into how we can continue to grow the Trust.
The Board works with senior management not only at Board meetings, but through four sub committees: finance, operations, digital and people & culture.
This is an exciting period for the Trust and we want to make sure we are in the best position possible so that we can support more people to achieve their employment goals.
