About the Role: Human Resources Manager

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Human Resources Manager to join our Human Resources team in our New York office. This role serves as the attorney HR generalist expert for the office and acts as a strategic partner to practice leadership. The successful candidate will oversee attorney HR processes, provide guidance on HR policies, and collaborate with stakeholders to translate business objectives into effective HR solutions. This position involves managing the full employee lifecycle, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, and supporting initiatives that enhance the firm's overall HR strategy. The Manager will work closely with global HR teams and legal counsel to address complex HR matters, including leaves of absence, immigration, and employee relations, ensuring a high-quality experience for our legal professionals and staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner proactively with practice leaders to align HR programs and initiatives with business strategies
  • Establish and oversee HR activities within the New York office, coordinating with centralized and shared services teams
  • Monitor and interpret state and federal labor laws, ensuring firm compliance and developing appropriate policies and procedures
  • Stay informed on legal industry trends and update policies to reflect best practices
  • Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance HR service delivery and operational efficiency
  • Support and facilitate the performance management process, including coaching partners on providing meaningful feedback
  • Develop templates and tools to streamline attorney HR transactions and administrative processes
  • Maintain and update the Attorney Administrative Manual policies and procedures
  • Handle complex HR matters such as leaves of absence, compensation issues, partner transitions, and remote work arrangements, collaborating with legal counsel as needed
  • Manage immigration processes for visa-holding attorneys in partnership with Global Mobility teams
  • Ensure onboarding processes are current and effectively communicate firm policies and programs
  • Respond to inquiries related to policies, procedures, and firm programs, providing expert guidance
  • Partner with legal risk management to ensure compliance with bar licensing and other legal requirements
  • Manage sensitive employee relations issues, escalating as appropriate and working with employment counsel on complex cases
  • Utilize data analytics to support leadership decision-making regarding workforce planning, diversity, and retention
  • Prepare reports and insights using HR systems such as Peoplesoft for various HR metrics
  • Establish feedback channels to gather insights from US offices and inform HR initiatives
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the firm’s strategic goals and operational needs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered
  • HR certification such as SPHR, SHRM-SCP, or equivalent preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of US federal and state labor and employment laws
  • 6-10 years of progressive HR management experience, preferably within a law firm or professional services environment
  • Proven success in partnering with leadership to develop and implement HR initiatives aligned with business goals
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with HR systems such as Peoplesoft or similar platforms is preferred
  • Excellent communication, coaching, and influencing skills at all organizational levels
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • High level of discretion, confidentiality, and ethical standards
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management capabilities
