Overview

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Engineering Manager Tools Platform to lead our new Tools Platform Team. This team is dedicated to building and evolving Toolforge, the backbone platform powering over 3,300 community-built tools that contribute to nearly 30% of all edits across Wikipedia and its sister projects.

Role Importance

This role sits at the intersection of infrastructure and contributor experience. The manager will ensure that Toolforge evolves into a reliable, scalable, intuitive, and inclusive production-grade platform for developers of all technical levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team building and maintaining core services for Toolforge and related platforms.
  • Simplify the tool lifecycle from creation to deprecation for easy contributor access.
  • Drive the transition to production-grade reliability using Kubernetes, Helm, and observability stacks.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, SRE, developer advocacy, and community contributors.
  • Set direction, unblock work, and ensure delivery of critical technical and organizational goals.
  • Hire and develop a high-performing, inclusive engineering team.

Desired Experience

Candidates should have experience managing engineering teams focused on infrastructure, platform, or developer-facing products; possess a strong technical background in systems engineering and cloud infrastructure; and demonstrate excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills.

Bonus Skills

Experience in open-source projects, familiarity with Toolforge or related Wikimedia platforms, and a passion for inclusive platform development are a plus.
