About The Senior Category Specialist Role

Whitehaven Coal is seeking a Senior Category Specialist to join its Procurement team in Newcastle. This full-time permanent position is based in the Newcastle office and will involve supporting the execution of Whitehaven Coal’s Procurement strategy, leading sourcing projects for goods and services, and contributing to a tight-knit and friendly team culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review spend analytics and develop robust sourcing strategies.
  • Lead competitive tendering activities for various goods and services.
  • Negotiate and establish favourable contracts with key suppliers.
  • Conduct thorough analysis of vendor spend data to identify opportunities.
  • Identify and mitigate commercial risks for the company.
  • Mentor and lead category team members, fostering their development.
  • Engage with senior stakeholders to establish award strategies aligned with business objectives.
  • Contribute to delivering sustainable procurement outcomes.
  • Undertake occasional travel to operating sites as required.

What You'll Bring

  • Extensive experience in leading high-complexity Procurement, Category management, or sourcing projects.
  • Strong negotiation skills and proven experience in leading tenders.
  • Experience in managing category teams.
  • Excellent analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Established stakeholder management skills, with a demonstrated capacity to effectively communicate with senior leaders.
  • Above-average computer skills, particularly in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • An understanding of the mining, resources, or construction industry is preferred but not essential.
