Role Description

The Buyer Growth team at Whatnot is crucial for driving top-of-funnel growth and ensuring the success of first-time buyers. Our focus spans acquisition, activation, and early retention. We collaborate closely with product, data, design, and marketing teams to craft experiences that attract new users into our ecosystem and cultivate them into loyal customers. In this role, you will:

  • Lead and scale critical growth initiatives, including onboarding flows, referral systems, guest browsing, and notification systems.
  • Design and own end-to-end systems, encompassing both backend services and frontend experiences, which will impact millions of users.
  • Drive architectural decisions to guarantee that systems are reliable, scalable, and extensible to support rapid growth.
  • Work across product, marketing, and data science to identify high-leverage growth opportunities and rapidly iterate on experiments.
  • Instrument, monitor, and continuously improve funnels to achieve measurable increases in new user conversion and retention.
  • Mentor other engineers and contribute to elevating engineering excellence across the entire team.

We offer the flexibility to work from home or from one of our global office hubs, while valuing in-person collaboration for planning, problem-solving, and team connection. Candidates for this role must reside within commuting distance of our Seattle, New York City, San Francisco, or Los Angeles hubs.

Candidate Profile

Individuals who thrive at Whatnot typically possess a low ego, a growth mindset, and a strong inclination towards action and high impact. We are looking for candidates with:

  • 5+ years of full-time, generalist software engineering experience in high-growth tech companies, with a proven track record of autonomously delivering impactful, user-facing products.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • A strong foundation in both backend and frontend development, comfortable transitioning between layers and integrating systems end-to-end.
  • Excellent product instincts, prioritizing user needs over purely technical solutions.
  • The ability to take ownership of ambiguous areas, define solutions, and drive impact.
  • Flexibility to manage multiple workstreams and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building E-commerce or Social products.
  • Expertise in mobile and/or full stack web development frameworks.
  • Familiarity with growth engineering strategies, A/B testing, and analytics.

Benefits

Whatnot offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support our employees:

  • Flexible Time Off Policy and Company-wide Holidays (including a spring and winter break).
  • Health Insurance options including Medical, Dental, and Vision.
  • Work From Home Support: Home office setup allowance and monthly allowance for cell phone and internet.
  • Care benefits: Monthly allowance for wellness and an annual allowance towards childcare.
  • Lifetime benefit for family planning, such as adoption or fertility expenses.
  • Retirement: 401k offering for Traditional and Roth accounts in the US (employer match up to 4% of base salary) and Pension plans internationally.
  • Monthly allowance to 'dogfood' the app: All Whatnauts are expected to develop a deep understanding of our product by using Whatnot as both a buyer and a seller (our budget makes this fun and easy!).
  • Parental Leave: 16 weeks of paid parental leave + one month gradual return to work (company leave allowances run concurrently with country leave requirements which take precedence).

Whatnot is an Equal Opportunity Employer, valuing diversity and inclusivity across all statuses protected by local law. We believe a diverse workforce enhances our work and company culture.
