About the role
Animator and Motion Designer
Vox is looking for an innovative animator and motion designer to join Unexplainable, to help conceptualize and create a fresh visual look for Vox’s Unexplainable video podcast. Currently an audio-only podcast, this person will work closely with the Unexplainable team and Vox’s Art Director to develop a playful visual look and graphics package for the video version of the show, creating graphics and animations for each week’s episode.
They will have professional expertise using Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Strong editorial judgment, superb communication skills, impeccable organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail are critical for this role, as you will work closely with editorial leadership, video producers, and freelancers to elevate our storytelling through compelling design and motion graphics while maintaining Vox style and standards.
This person will be a self starter and creative thinker who wants to experiment with new storytelling formats. We want someone who’s not afraid to try new things and bring fresh ideas to the position.
This is a part-time, benefits-eligible role, working 20 hours/week, on a one-year contract.
What You’ll Do
- Design visuals for Unexplainable weekly video podcast episodes, working closely with show production teams to deliver weekly episodes by deadline.
- Working closely with the Unexplainable team and with oversight from Vox’s Art Director to develop a visual look and graphics package for the show.
- Create original assets and templates for videos and video podcasts.
- Collaborate closely with editorial leadership, Vox’s other art director, and video producers.
- Provide art direction and graphic supervision for video packages for visual clarity and adhering to the Vox style guide.
- Adhere to all journalistic and legal standards at all times.
- Complete additional duties as assigned.
Who You Are
- We’re looking for a creative, enthusiastic designer with a passion for Vox’s explanatory mission.
- 3-4 years of graphic design and animation experience with a portfolio demonstrating strong, relevant work.
- A passion for Vox’s mission of helping audiences understand what really matters.
- Deep familiarity with Vox’s video voice and style.
- Superb design taste and attention to detail and accuracy.
- Experience and comfort with providing visual feedback.
- Experience in video editing.
- Experience in finding and collecting relevant archival footage and material.
- Creative drive to explore new approaches to visual storytelling.
- Awareness of what media competitors are doing in this space.
- Strong communication, organizational and time-management skills.
- Collaborative team player who will enjoy working across the organization.
- Fluent in Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator with a familiarity in Premiere Pro.

PAY TRANSPARENCY
The hourly range listed below represents the minimum and maximum base pay for this position at the time of this posting. Final salary offered to the candidate selected for the position will be based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience.
