The Position: Associate IP Counsel
This role is central to protecting the innovations that drive Veracyte's mission to transform cancer care. You will work cross-functionally with R&D, BD, and external partners to identify, protect, and leverage Veracyte’s intellectual property assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Invention Harvesting & Patent Strategy: Collaborate with scientists and technical teams to identify patentable inventions and guide strategic filings.
- Patent Portfolio Management: Oversee outside counsel through the lifecycle of the patent portfolio.
- Freedom-to-Operate & Risk Assessment: Support FTO analyses and advise on IP risks during product development.
- Research & Development Agreements: Draft, review, and negotiate various research collaboration agreements and licenses.
- IP Training: Provide training and guidance on IP matters to internal teams.
- Patent Program Build-out: Contribute to process improvements and strategic planning for Veracyte’s patent program.
- Overflow Support for Contracts Counsel: Support on commercial contracts as needed.
Who You Are
You are a strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and a collaborative mindset. You thrive in fast-paced environments energized by complex challenges and meaningful work.
Required Qualifications
- JD (or equivalent) with active bar membership.
- Minimum 5 years legal experience including life sciences IP work.
- Strong analytical skills with business-focused legal advice.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills across technical and non-technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Patent bar membership.
- Law firm training in patent prosecution or technology transactions.
- Experience in project management or leading cross-functional initiatives.
- Prior in-house experience in a biotech or diagnostics company.
Compensation
Base pay ranges from $159,000 to $215,000 USD, with additional discretionary bonuses/incentives and restricted stock units as part of the total compensation package.
