About RF Test Engineer at RF Test Engineer

At Vast, our mission is to contribute to a future where billions of people are living and thriving in space. We are building artificial gravity space stations, starting with Haven-1, the world’s first commercial space station launching into low earth orbit in May 2026.

Role Overview

As an RF Test Engineer reporting to the Director, RF Engineering, you will develop and deploy creative test solutions for complex RF communications and antenna systems that support artificial gravity space stations. Your work is vital in developing and testing new and existing RF hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with RF and antenna engineers to design automated test systems.
  • Develop test automation software for instruments, data processing, sequencing, and reporting.
  • Define RF test system requirements and specifications.
  • Support spacecraft RF test activities including OTA, EMI/EMC, and antenna measurements.
  • Conduct environmental tests (thermal cycling, TVAC, vibration, shock, etc.) and support integration tests in cleanroom facilities.
  • Design test hardware, fixtures, and PCBs.
  • Contribute to developing space-rated RF product hardware designs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in ECE, EE, Physics, or related STEM discipline.
  • 2+ years experience in an RF design and/or test role.
  • Experience with RF test equipment: Spectrum Analyzers, VNAs, Signal Generators, etc.
  • Python software development experience.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • MS in ECE, EE, Physics, or related STEM discipline.
  • Mission oriented mindset with strong team collaboration skills.
  • Effective communication of technical topics.
  • Experience with GNU Radio and software-defined radios (SDRs).
  • Knowledge of RF modulation schemes and IP networking.
  • Familiarity with serial protocols (CAN, SPI, I2C, RS-422/485) and space-rated avionics standards.

Additional Requirements & Compensation

This full-time, exempt position is located in Long Beach, CA. Candidates must be able to travel up to 10% and work evenings/weekends for critical milestones. Compensation ranges from $120,000 to $175,000 USD, depending on experience, with a comprehensive benefits package.
