What We Look For In a Latin 4 Tutor

We are seeking tutors with exceptional qualifications and a passion for classical studies:

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of advanced Latin syntax, prose composition, literary analysis of classical authors including Vergil, Cicero, Ovid, and Horace, meter and scansion, rhetorical devices, and Roman cultural and historical contexts. Ability to explain dactylic hexameter, periodic sentence structure, and literary allusion while preparing students for AP Latin, college Latin placement, or classical studies programs.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching literary analysis of original Latin texts, metrical scanning, and rhetorical device identification. Guides students through translating unadapted passages from the Aeneid and other classical works, analyzing authorial technique, writing literary commentaries, and composing Latin prose. Emphasizes developing genuine reading ability in Latin and connects classical literature to Western literary tradition and philosophical thought.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with Latin 4 curricula and common challenges such as reading unadapted Latin at speed, scanning dactylic hexameter, and writing analytical literary commentaries. Adapts instruction using guided translation practice, scansion exercises, and AP Latin exam preparation to support advanced students preparing for AP examinations, college-level classics courses, or continued classical scholarship.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
