About the Role: Controller at Vaco by Highspring
Vaco by Highspring is seeking a high-integrity, detail-oriented Controller to oversee the accounting and operational functions for a diverse portfolio of investment vehicles. This is an "ownership" role that manages the financial lifecycle of various partnerships, separately managed accounts (SMAs), and private equity funds. The ideal candidate is a Big 4/Public Accounting trained professional who has successfully transitioned into the investment industry and thrives in a high-touch, mid-sized firm environment.
Core Responsibilities
- Financial Oversight: Lead the end-to-end month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring the integrity of all financial statements and supporting schedules for audits.
- Investment Operations: Partner with research and portfolio management teams to assist in trade execution and oversee the posting and reconciliation of alternative investments.
- Reporting & Performance: Prepare sophisticated daily performance reports and monthly/quarterly client packages that track significant investments and fund performance.
- Cash & Portfolio Reconciliation: Manage complex cash and position reconciliations between custodians and internal portfolio systems; investigate and resolve trade breaks.
- Fund Administration: Calculate and process fund distributions, prepare capital statements, and manage the administrative lifecycle for private equity and hedge fund vehicles.
- Tax & Audit Coordination: Oversee annual custody audits, coordinate the preparation of firm tax returns, and ensure all year-end 1099 requirements are met.
The Ideal Profile
- Foundation: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA highly preferred.
- Experience: 7+ years of progressive experience, starting in Big 4 or a top-tier public accounting firm, followed by direct experience in the Investment Management industry.
- Leadership: Proven ability to mentor or manage junior staff and "own" the accounting function with minimal supervision.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong command of portfolio management systems and advanced Excel skills.
- Discretion: Ability to handle sensitive financial data and high-net-worth client information with the utmost confidentiality.
