Job Description

The Opportunity as a Property Adjuster - Desk CAT Team at USAA

As a dedicated Property Adjuster, you will operate within established guidelines and frameworks to investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and settle property insurance claims of low to moderate complexity. Your responsibilities include confirming and analyzing coverage, recognizing liability exposure, and negotiating equitable settlements, all while adhering to state regulatory requirements. You will also empathetically recognize members' life events as appropriate, ensuring a supportive and understanding approach.

This role is remote eligible across the continental U.S. However, if you reside within a 60-mile radius of a USAA office (San Antonio, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, Chesapeake, VA, or Tampa, FL), you will be expected to work on-site three days per week. Relocation assistance is not provided for this position.

The desk Property Adjuster role is an hourly, non-exempt position, offering opportunities for overtime and CAT pay. The ideal candidate will possess strong virtual estimating skills for low to moderate severity losses and/or the ability to reconcile estimates while working in a telephone-concentrated environment without physical inspection of the loss. Typical work schedules are Monday to Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm (local time), with potential for extended hours to support CAT claims.

What You'll Do

  • Proactively manage an assigned claims caseload, primarily consisting of claims with low to moderate complexity damages, requiring commensurate knowledge and understanding of claims coverage.
  • Collaborate with vendors and internal business partners to facilitate the resolution of low to moderate complexity claims. This may also involve coordination with external regulatory bodies to ensure proper documentation and compliance.
  • Investigate claim damages by conducting thorough research from various sources, including the insured, third parties, and external resources. You will identify and resolve potential discrepancies and recognize subrogation potential stemming from unusual claim characteristics.
  • Identify coverage concerns, review prior loss history, and determine when to create Special Investigation Unit (SIU) referrals. You will determine coverage by analyzing investigation information related to low to moderate complexity policy terms and contingencies.
  • Determine and negotiate claims settlements for low to moderate complexity cases. Coordinate with management for guidance on assessing settlement amounts that fall outside of your authority limits to support optimal claims outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate, thorough, and current claim file documentation throughout the entire claims process.
  • Apply knowledge of estimating technology platforms and virtual inspection tools to prepare and manage property insurance claim estimates of low to moderate complexity.
  • Recognize and address jurisdictional challenges, including applicable legislation and construction considerations relevant to claims.
  • Support workload surges and catastrophe (CAT) response operations as needed, which includes mandatory on-call dates and potential evening, weekend, and/or holiday work outside of normal hours.
  • May be assigned CAT deployment travel with minimal notice during designated catastrophes.
  • Work various types of claims, including those of higher complexity, and may be assigned additional duties outside normal responsibilities as needed.
  • Ensure that risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What You Have

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma.
  • 1 year of customer service, military leadership, construction-related industry/insurance experience, and/or experience handling low complexity property claims.
  • Knowledge of estimating losses using Xactimate or similar tools and platforms.
  • Demonstrated negotiation, investigation, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of claims contracts, as well as the application of case law and state laws and regulations.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task, including navigating through multiple business applications efficiently.
  • May need to travel up to 25% of the year (local & non-local) and/or work catastrophe duty when required.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain an insurance adjuster license within 90 days and 3 attempts.

What Sets You Apart

  • Currently reside in the Eastern or Central time zones, within catastrophe-prone areas.
  • 1+ years of residential property adjusting experience for moderate complexity claims.
  • 1+ years of estimate writing skills using Xactimate, Claim X, or virtual estimating tools.
  • Proficiency with virtual tools such as Claim X, Hover, and Hosta.
  • Experience managing claims from initial notification (FNOL), including policy review, coverage decisions, through to final settlement.
  • Experience scoping losses, assessing damages, interpreting policy, and making claim decisions.
  • Prior experience on a Property Catastrophe team handling inside or field claims (e.g., wind, hail, hurricane, flooding).
  • In-depth knowledge of homeowner property policies and endorsements.
  • Currently hold an active Property & Casualty Adjuster license.
  • Previous direct experience working for a standard insurance carrier.
  • Ability to work overtime and extended hours to support CAT claims.
  • US military experience through service or as a military spouse/domestic partner.
