Job Description

Registered Nurse - Operating Room

The Northport VA Medical Center is seeking a Full Time Registered Nurse to join the Operating Room team within the Medical/Surgical section of the Nursing Service. This role specializes in perioperative nursing practice, providing direct patient care.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduation: Approved nursing school (ACEN or CCNE accredited). Foreign graduates may require equivalency validation.
  • Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license as a registered nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: May be appointed temporarily while pursuing licensure.

Grade Determinations:

  • Nurse I - Level I: ADN/Diploma in Nursing.
  • Nurse I - Level II: ADN/Diploma + 1 year specialized experience OR BSN.
  • Nurse I - Level III: ADN/Diploma + 2 years professional experience (1yr at Nurse I Level 2) OR BSN + 1 year professional experience (equivalent to Nurse I Level 2) OR MSN.
  • Nurse II: BSN + 2 years professional experience (equivalent to Nurse I Level 3) OR MSN + 1 year specialized experience (equivalent to Nurse I Level 3) OR Doctoral degree in Nursing.
  • Nurse III: MSN + 2 years specialized experience (1yr equivalent to Nurse II) OR Doctoral degree in Nursing + 1 year specialized experience (equivalent to Nurse II).

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work effectively in stressful situations and shift priorities.
  • Limited standing, stooping, bending, pulling, pushing, walking; ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Sitting for long periods, typing, using a computer monitor and telephone.
  • Potential exposure to infected patients/materials and combative/aggressive patients.
  • Must pass required screening and be medically cleared.

Duties

  • Delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care, developing technical competencies.
  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age-specific components.
  • Coordinates care focusing on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction.
  • Administers medications and procedures per policies.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to influence care outcomes.
  • Responsible for preoperative assessment and postoperative evaluation.
  • Provides individualized direct care with emphasis on the intraoperative period.
  • Serves as scrub/instrument and circulating nurse.
  • Maintains required training.
  • May be assigned additional duties as needed.
