Registered Nurse - Nurse Manager

The Manhattan VA Health Care System is seeking a full-time Nurse Manager / Patient Care Team Coordinator.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) - no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduation from an approved school of professional nursing accredited by ACEN or CCNE.
  • Alternatively, individuals in a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may be appointed on a temporary basis upon achievement of a State license and converted to permanent upon graduation. (Reference VA Handbook 5005 - Appendix G6)
  • For graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration is required. Higher education requires formal degree equivalency validation.
  • Must possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates without the required licensure may be appointed temporarily as a GNT while actively pursuing licensure.
  • Note: Grandfathering Provision: Current VHA employees in the 0610 series performing similar duties are considered to have met all qualification requirements.

Grade Determinations:

Criteria include Dimension requirements (Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research) detailed in the online assessment. Specific education and experience requirements vary for Nurse I (Levels I, II, III), Nurse II, and Nurse III, with increasing responsibilities and experience required for higher levels.

  • Nurse I - Level I: Fundamental, knowledge-based care. Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing.
  • Nurse I - Level II: Integration of biopsychosocial concepts. ADN or Diploma AND 1 year of specialized experience OR BSN.
  • Nurse I - Level III: Proficiency in practice, conscious planning, self-directed for complex situations. ADN or Diploma AND 2 years of experience (1 year equivalent to Nurse I - Level 2) OR BSN and 1 year of experience OR MSN.
  • Nurse II: Leadership in holistic care. BSN with 2 years of experience OR MSN with 1 year of experience OR Doctoral degree.
  • Nurse III: Leadership, experience, and creative approaches to complex client care management. MSN and 2 years of experience OR Doctoral degree and 1 year of experience.

*Note: Foreign education programs/degrees are not creditable as related degrees.

Duties

The Registered Nurse - MICU PCTC Manager is accountable for a 12-bed ICU and 6-bed CCU, including a Cardiac Cath Lab with 2 monitored rooms for invasive Cardiac procedures. Also responsible for overseeing the TAVR program.

As the Patient Care Team Coordinator (PCTC), you will be accountable for the management, supervision, and evaluation of patient care delivered by over 50 FTEs (nursing and allied health staff) on a 24/7 basis. This role involves clinical coordination of patient care to achieve quality nursing outcomes, and you will act as the leader of an interdisciplinary team, consulting with experts to address practice and performance issues.

General Description of Assigned Duties:

  • Functions as a clinical expert, responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process.
  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age-specific components.
  • Coordinates care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates sound decision-making, judgment, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Self-directed and influences care outcomes by collaborating with the interdisciplinary team and leading innovative process improvement initiatives.
  • Executes responsibilities demonstrating leadership, experience, and creative approaches to complex client care management.

Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties:

  • The Nurse Manager (NM) is the first-line supervisory authority responsible for the 24/7 operation of assigned units.
  • Responsible for staff orientation, training, development, and performance evaluation.
  • Acts as a role model, educator, practitioner, and supervisor, providing leadership to the team.
  • Influences care outcomes by collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to remove barriers and implement new evidence-based programs/processes.

Preferred experience: 3-5 years of Acute care ICU RN experience and/or Cardiac Cath Lab RN experience, and MSN with 2-3 years of progressive leadership/Supervisory experience as a Nurse Manager in a major medical center.

This position requires on-site work in the clinical area of assignment.
