Job Description

Writing Instructor

The Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre at the University of Toronto Mississauga is seeking dedicated Writing Instructors for the Summer 2026 session. This role involves providing essential writing support to undergraduate and graduate students across diverse academic disciplines.

Nature of the Assignment

Writing Instructors counsel students individually and in small groups on various aspects of university writing, focusing especially on organization, reasoning, style, and effective language use.

Assignment Description

Instructors will engage with students to discuss and provide constructive feedback on academic writing assignments from a wide array of disciplines, including Forensic Science, Anthropology, and Computer Science. The role involves both one-on-one consultations and small group sessions. Instructors may also be asked to deliver group instruction on academic writing topics.

Schedule Information

The position requires a mix of in-person and synchronous online hours from Monday to Thursday, 10am – 4pm. A limited number of asynchronous online hours from 3-6pm may also be available. Synchronous and asynchronous appointments will be conducted using the WCONLINE platform. Mandatory paid training on synchronous and/or asynchronous writing instruction will be provided in the first two weeks of May for instructors who have not received it recently.

Salary

  • $56.46/hour (Writing Instructor 1)
  • $60.69/hour (Writing Instructor 2)
  • $62.48/hour (Writing Instructor 2 – Priority)
All positions are subject to budgetary approval. Rates stipulated in the collective agreement will prevail if they vary from this posting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A PhD degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., Applied Linguistics, Communication, English, Education) with strong writing and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Flexible availability is a requirement for these positions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant experience teaching writing one-on-one or teaching university courses with a significant writing component.
  • Previous experience working in a writing centre.
  • Training and experience in second-language instruction at the university level.
  • Experience with science writing is considered a valuable asset.

Description Of Duties

Instructors will meet with students via in-person sessions, synchronized/asynchronized online appointments, or during drop-in hours to assist them with writing assignments across various disciplines.
