Job Description

Assistant/Associate Professor, Soft Tissue Surgery, Academic Clinician (AC) Track

The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine, Section of Surgery invites qualified individuals to apply for an open faculty position in the Academic Clinician (AC) track in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Key Responsibilities and Role Focus

Faculty members in the Academic Clinician (AC) track are primarily devoted to clinical service (42 weeks a year) in the Matthew J Ryan Veterinary Hospital. They participate in the clinical instruction of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Clinic time will be divided between soft tissue surgery and surgical oncology, with flexibility in the amount of service in each area. Time away from clinical service is dedicated to professional development, study for Board preparation (if applicable), departmental citizenship, and didactic teaching. Developing or maintaining independent scholarship or research is not a focus of the AC track, is not a requirement for reappointment or promotion, and should not detract from excellence in clinical service and teaching. Faculty AC positions are long-term, non-tenured Associated Faculty positions with reappointment every three years. Promotion along the University Academic ranks is available.

Clinical Practice and Collaboration

The successful candidate will join Penn Vet’s Section of Surgery, which comprises eight faculty members and seven residents. Penn Vet offers an opportunity to practice in a cutting-edge academic service within a busy urban academic teaching hospital. The hospital is staffed with specialists in all areas, including outstanding anesthesiology and critical care teams, and a comprehensive canine and feline blood bank with an active donor program for optimal peri-operative care. Mentorship and growth in specialized areas such as renal transplantation, microvascular surgery, minimally invasive surgery, advanced upper and lower urinary tract surgery, and interventional radiology are available based on applicant interest. Surgeons benefit from the Rosenthal Imaging and Treatment Center, featuring multi-slice CT, MRI, and a Varian linear accelerator with IMRT capability, as well as the recently renovated Richard Lichter emergency room and state-of-the-art Advanced Dentistry and Oral Surgery Suite. Adjacent to the veterinary hospital are three world-class biomedical hospitals and research centers—The Perelman School of Medicine, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Wistar Institute—offering excellent collaborative opportunities.

Qualifications and Compensation

Candidates must possess a veterinary degree. Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or successful completion of an accredited surgical residency with preparation for board certification is required. Salary will be commensurate with professional and academic credentials and experience.

Application Process

Applications will be accepted immediately and reviewed until an appropriate candidate is identified. A signed non-competition agreement is required for all faculty hires at Penn Vet. Interested applicants should apply online via Penn’s Faculty HR website. The application system will require a letter of intent including a personal statement, a Curriculum Vitae, and contact information for three references. These materials should be submitted for the attention of the Search Committee Chairs, Dr. Pavlisko, Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine. Direct questions to Dr. Noah Pavlisko (pavlisko@vet.upenn.edu) or Ms. Kelli Cave (kellijw@vet.upenn.edu).

Location and Benefits

The position is located in Philadelphia. The University provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, including multiple retirement savings options and tuition benefits for the candidate’s spouse or dependent children. Philadelphia is a vibrant, historic city offering diverse cultural experiences and easy access to major East Coast cities and recreational areas.
