Overview
The University of Iowa Department of Pathology is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician specializing in Histology. Candidates will perform clinical laboratory analyses on biological specimens supporting diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of diseases.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform Immunology procedures including Immunohistochemistry, frozen section cutting, direct Immunofluorescence, and FISH.
- Conduct histologic procedures: embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping.
- Execute clinical electron microscopy and histological analysis on specimens.
- Calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
- Perform daily quality control/assurance, record and review tests results.
- Comply with departmental document control policies.
Qualifications
For Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT): Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology OR ASCP/NCA eligibility; certification is highly desirable. Histology, electron microscopy, and advanced immunohistochemistry experience are pluses.
For Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS): Bachelor’s degree in relevant sciences with 6-12 months clinical experience; ASCP or HEW certification required. Additional desirable experiences mirror the MLT requirements.
Position Details
This is a full-time, 1st shift position (0300-1130, Monday-Friday) with rotating on-call. Salary starts at $48,500 for MLT and $53,500 for MLS, commensurate with experience, with potential for a $5,000 sign-on incentive.
