About the Role

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary is seeking a Laboratory Technician for a full-time, fixed term position of approximately 4 months with potential extension. You will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator, assisting in a research project focused on bacterial cultures including mycobacterium avium spp paratuberculosis and its survival in fecal samples.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in finalizing research projects using bacterial cultures
  • Compile and analyze data points and research findings
  • Draft and compile reports for peer-review
  • Implement good laboratory practices at the foothills campus
  • Utilize existing protocols and troubleshoot equipment issues
  • Work independently to develop research questions and analytic approaches

Qualifications & Requirements

Candidates should demonstrate a thorough understanding of microbiology lab techniques including mRNA extraction, gDNA synthesis, and qPCR methods used to study bacterial survival in environmental/fecal samples. Strong independent reporting skills and the ability to deliver a solid draft report for peer-review are essential.

Additional Information

This position is part of the AUPE bargaining unit and falls under the Technical Job Family, Phase 1. The application deadline is October 17, 2025. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
