Overview
The University of Calgary's Department of Physiology & Pharmacology invites applications for a Laboratory Assistant. This full-time fixed term position runs approximately 12 months, with a possibility of extension, based on grant funding.
About the Role
Working in the Reception area of the Alberta Centre for Toxicology (ACFT), a public health laboratory, you will receive and process environmental and biological samples for testing. These include samples like water, fish, air, blood, and urine. The workload may vary with the number of samples received and shift rotation between days and evenings.
Key Responsibilities
- Login samples on Laboratory Information System (LIS) and aliquot as per procedures.
- Perform filing, faxing, and send sample rejection letters.
- Order supplies and update databases using PeopleSoft.
- Calibrate laboratory equipment such as pipettes and refractometers.
- Monitor gas cylinders and dewars, and maintain glassware cleanliness.
- Record freezer/fridge temperatures and manage biohazard waste disposal.
Qualifications / Requirements
- High School Diploma required; 1 year related experience preferred.
- Valid driver's license is an asset.
- Proficient in English, basic keyboarding, Windows software and data entry.
- Experience with AHS LIS or similar laboratory LIMS is desirable.
- Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently, and multitask.
- Physical ability to lift moderately heavy objects and handle equipment.
