Position Summary

The Manager, eLearning & Curriculum supports the implementation of the Princess Margaret Cancer Program's education strategic plan, encompassing both patient/public and provider education, as well as continuing professional development. This role requires a unique skill set to manage both portfolios, bringing expertise in health literacy and its curricular application to eLearning environments for cancer patients/survivors, alongside proficiency in interprofessional curriculum design and implementation for health professional students, trainees, and staff in both digital and in-person settings.

Duties

The Manager will lead and manage a comprehensive education healthcare support service by:

  • Leading the design, establishment, and delivery of e-learning strategies and standards for curriculum content for cancer patients, survivors, and health professional staff and trainees.
  • Reviewing current organizational practices and procedures to develop quality improvement tools/systems for enhanced efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Promoting collaboration with clinical programs to plan quality curricula for interprofessional and continuing education.
  • Providing strategic learning expertise, developing modality options, making policy and delivery recommendations, and designing/implementing services related to e-learning training programs and curriculum development.
  • Developing and managing comprehensive performance measures and indicators to assess and monitor the effectiveness of targeted training initiatives.
  • Partnering to capture peer-reviewed education grants and publishing outcomes to influence other health professional training institutions.
  • Implementing new models of interprofessional teaching, learning, and practice transformation.
  • Implementing new models of teaching, learning, and evaluation for patients, families, and staff.
  • Developing and evaluating interprofessional education certification programs for health professionals, patients, and families.
  • Developing and maintaining effective consultation networks and working relationships internally and with provincial hospital, academic partners, and external stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develops, manages, and maintains e-education curricula and programs for interprofessional staff, students, patients, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Understands and contributes to the strategic plan for a comprehensive Education Program.
  • Provides leadership on institution-wide committees to ensure education needs are championed.
  • Leads initiatives supporting the mission and goals of the Princess Margaret Cancer Education Program.
  • Assists multidisciplinary care staff in developing patient teaching initiatives.
  • Facilitates assessment, design, delivery, and evaluation of institutional patient education initiatives, utilizing institutional and departmental plans.
  • Facilitates the development of educational materials and resources necessary for service implementation and evaluation.
  • Ensures facilities, equipment, and resources are available to achieve Education goals.

Human Resources Management

Manages all aspects of departmental human resources, including:

  • Supporting organizational strategies for developing a motivated and cohesive team.
  • Promoting professional growth and development, approving and monitoring training programs.
  • Collaborating in staff recruitment and retention strategies, including job documentation and orientation.
  • Developing, implementing, and communicating performance measures, conducting appraisals, and providing coaching.
  • Promoting a teamwork environment that values diversity and cultural sensitivity.
  • Managing employee relations issues, workload, and attendance.
  • Maintaining responsibility for compensation decisions or making recommendations.
  • Using multiple communication strategies to keep staff informed of UHN developments.
  • Promoting and maintaining a healthy and safe work environment.

Quality

Manages the development, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance of departmental and education quality improvement initiatives by:

  • Aligning initiatives with established site and/or UHN standards and values.
  • Incorporating Quality Improvement measures to meet strategic goals for patient education services.
  • Collaborating with site management and Quality Teams to design and implement appropriate quality programs with indicators.
  • Monitoring quality improvement outcomes and developing action plans as needed.
  • Coaching staff/volunteers to ensure continuous quality improvement is integrated into daily activities.
  • Assisting site management in meeting Accreditation standards and timely report completion.
  • Measuring and evaluating the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of electronic educational materials.

Planning

Develops, implements, and manages short- and long-term plans aligned with organizational goals by:

  • Monitoring changing priorities, trends, and legislative requirements to analyze potential impact.
  • Reviewing/modifying existing and identifying/developing new plans integrated with site/organizational objectives.
  • Developing and implementing the departmental annual operating plan and staff/volunteer utilization plans.
  • Monitoring progress towards goals and taking action as required.
  • Developing and implementing day-to-day operating policies, systems, and procedures for departmental effectiveness.
  • Collaborating in the development of organizational policies and procedures.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of long-term strategic planning, marketing, and program evaluation.

Financial Management

Manages departmental financial resources by:

  • Managing the departmental annual operating budget for optimal resource utilization.
  • Approving expenditures within signing authority limits.
  • Monitoring, analyzing, and reconciling variances from the approved plan.
  • Analyzing financial and statistical reports to monitor performance and attain budgeted targets.
  • Identifying annual capital requirements in conjunction with the capital planning process.
  • Identifying and developing strategies to streamline operations, improve programs/services, and reduce costs.
  • Preparing and presenting financial reports.
  • Collaborating with the Foundation to identify and cultivate a donor base for patient education initiatives.
  • Identifying and securing alternate sources of funding for patient education initiatives and research.

Corporate Contribution

Performs various corporate management responsibilities by:

  • Initiating and developing respectful and collaborative working relationships internally and externally.
  • Representing the department and/or site on UHN and site-specific committees and in the external community.
  • Contributing to corporate efforts and initiatives to enhance UHN's mission, values, and goals.

Research Responsibilities

  • Establishes evidence-based best practices for patient education.
  • Encourages new knowledge by promoting a research agenda for patient education.
  • Interacts with a research team for monitoring the effectiveness of patient education services.
  • Performs cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a degree, preferably in Education or Communications.
  • Certified in adult education, e-learning specialist, instructional design, or willing to become certified.
  • Five (5) or more years of management experience required.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and motivational skills.
  • Effective program coordination skills.
  • Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity.
  • Excellent skills in recognizing, analyzing, and resolving problems.
  • Excellent decision-making skills and good judgment in difficult situations.
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and demonstrate composure under pressure.
  • Exercises initiative and good judgment with the ability to multi-task.
  • Adapts to and implements change, facilitating its acceptance by others.
  • Working knowledge of computer, preferably Microsoft Office and Outlook applications.
  • Understanding of Internet/Intranet technologies and Content Management principles.
  • Ability to add content to intranet/internet sites using Xpedio and basic HTML (Dreamweaver).
  • Maintains and protects patient confidentiality in accordance with UHN policy.
