Pharmacist, Investigational Drug Service at UCSF Health

Under the Department of Pharmaceutical Services, the Investigational Drug Services (IDS) Staff Pharmacist II provides pharmaceutical care to patients in all areas where pharmaceutical services for IDS are provided within the UCSF Health System. This role is crucial for ensuring the safe and effective use of investigational drugs.

The IDS Staff Pharmacist II performs a wide range of pharmaceutical care functions, including:

  • Obtaining comprehensive medication histories.
  • Reviewing and assessing medication profiles thoroughly.
  • Providing essential drug information to patients and healthcare providers.
  • Collaborating with clinicians on drug selection and therapeutic plans.
  • Ensuring patient access to necessary medications.
  • Educating patients on proper medication use, cautions, adverse reactions, and interactions.

This position involves being part of an interprofessional team comprising physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other professionals. The primary base for the IDS Staff Pharmacist II will be in the IDS pharmacy setting, where they will manage patients on investigational medication therapy.

Depending on assigned shifts and sites, the IDS Staff Pharmacist II may also oversee pharmacy technicians, facilitating insurance authorizations for medications, and preparing and dispensing prescription medications and pharmaceutical products. They may also be responsible for the oversight of clinical activities and service delivery.

Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations, depending on operational needs, is required.

Department Description: Pharmaceutical Services at UCSF

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at UCSF is nationally recognized for its pioneering clinical pharmacy services, established in 1965. The department continues to lead through integrating advanced technology and robotics, comprehensive pharmaceutical care, and clinical services. It provides a full range of services including drug procurement, storage, security, accurate preparation and distribution, clinical pharmacy services, drug use policy development, and drug information services. The department is affiliated with the UCSF Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic department within the School of Pharmacy, responsible for teaching, clinical research, and public/clinical service.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) or equivalent determined by the National Board of Pharmacy.
  • Current license in good standing to practice pharmacy in the State of California.
  • Current certification for Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency and/or Fellowship, or at least 3 years of IDS/Infusion/Oncology experience.
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY2 Oncology/Investigational Drug Services Pharmacy Residency and/or Fellowship, or at least 3 years of IDS/Infusion/Oncology experience.
  • Advanced board certification (e.g., BCOP, BCPPS, or BCPS).
  • Operational experience in Oncology and Investigational Drug Services.

License/Certification

  • Must possess a current license in good standing to practice pharmacy in the State of California.
  • Current certification for Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association.
