Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Staff Pharmacist, Registry in the Adult Inpatient Pharmacy. As a Staff Pharmacist, Registry, you will provide clinical and distributive pharmacy services for patients receiving treatment within an assigned area. Our pharmacists cover the pharmacy operations and clinical needs for both the CCD and Comer pharmacies and support our 24/7 coverage model for patient care. This department supports and provides direct patient care to patients of all ages and of all patient populations.

Staff Pharmacists are aligned with a medical service or group of patients based on a geographical area within the University of Chicago hospitals. They are expected to actively participate in related education and research activities. They also ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of all medication orders by evaluating drug selection, dose, frequency, safety, dosage form, allergies, drug interactions, and disease state interactions prior to dispensing of medications and demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of assigned patients.

Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the patient’s life span and assess data reflective of the patient’s status. Interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs and provide the care needed.
  • Supervises pharmacy technicians working under their direction.
  • Identify service requirements by interaction and consultation with patients, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and technicians.
  • Ensure proper drug utilization by monitoring compliance with drug use criteria, clinical pathways, and IV to PO conversion. Contribute to ongoing drug utilization review activities and other quality assurance reporting programs by active support and participation.
  • Ensure proper dosing of medications based on Pharmacokinetic principles and serum drug level monitoring. Participation in the hospitals Pharmacokinetic dosing service.
  • Maintain and enhance up-to-date professional knowledge of drug and drug therapy by attending educational meetings and reviewing relevant professional journals and suggested readings.
  • Clarify and solve problems concerning medication orders with prescribing physicians, suggest alternative medication therapies to physicians when appropriate, serve as a source of information for Investigational drug information for health professionals, identify and report adverse drug reactions.
  • Document clinical interventions which prevent or eliminate drug-related problems (i.e. Adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, etc.) or promote cost-effective drug therapy.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Registered Pharmacist Licensure in the state of Illinois or eligible for same.
  • Two years hospital pharmacy experience in an organized health care setting.
  • Knowledge of contemporary hospital/clinical practice and service.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, support personnel, and students.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general hospital operations.
  • Ability to integrate clinical services, distributive services, education, and research activities.
  • Board Certification in area of expertise is required within 18 months of hire (ie. BCPS, BCOP, BCACP, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy or another advanced degree preferred.
  • Completion of an ASHP accredited residency highly preferred.
  • Exceptional aptitude or knowledge may be considered in lieu of experience.
