Self-Perform Superintendent - Concrete
Turner Construction Company is seeking a Self-Perform Superintendent specializing in concrete for their Northern California Division. This role is crucial for overseeing and directing self-perform operations (SPO) on concrete projects, ensuring adherence to safety, schedule, quality, and production standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, forecast, lead, direct, and coordinate the work of Self-Perform Operations (SPO) staff, subcontractors, and suppliers on concrete projects.
- Oversee and confirm the implementation of planned work for adherence to contracted scope, focusing on safety, schedule sequence, quality, and production.
- Supervise Trade labor in concrete and other areas of responsibility.
- Establish production requirements with Trades Foreperson and measure results weekly, adjusting work practices to increase production.
- Monitor and report installed quantities and percentage of completion for SPO concrete tasks, sharing findings in production meetings.
- Monitor jobsite deliveries for approved materials according to the project schedule.
- Assist General Superintendent and/or Trades Manager with hiring and termination decisions for Trade labor.
- Develop and maintain relationships with labor sources and craft employees, overseeing work for coordinated project operations.
- Plan, communicate, and implement work related to scheduling, delivery, logistics, quality control, and trade employee staffing.
- Coordinate work with Forepersons and Superintendents of other trades interacting with concrete structure.
- Resolve local area problems related to procedures, design clarifications, labor, and equipment schedules.
- Develop and implement SPO safety plan in compliance with company standards and regulations.
- Select appropriate formwork for each structure application to enhance quality, safety, and work production.
- Make Job Hazard Analysis available to Forepersons for daily pre-task planning.
- Supervise and oversee Trade forepersons, providing feedback and contributing to performance appraisals.
- Communicate work plan, schedule, and project deadlines clearly to Trades foreperson, staff, and crew.
- Foster a clean, respectful, and organized work environment.
- Monitor staff and crew productivity and confirm availability of materials and equipment.
- Investigate, communicate, and resolve field issues with Owners, Representatives, Architects, and/or Engineers.
- Manage monthly estimates of work completed, payrolls, material invoices, and subcontractor payment applications.
- Manage installation of work in compliance with approved contract documents.
- Monitor and confirm accuracy of take-off work and manage material procurement.
- Assist in bidding work to review productivity and execution approach.
- Analyze drawings to identify potential construction constraints.
- Utilize lean construction methods such as Last Planner System (LPS) for proactive scheduling.
- Other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 6 years of related experience as a Superintendent managing concrete specialty work, or as a Trades or General Foreperson.
- Experience managing work as a concrete superintendent with a portfolio of completed structures.
- In-depth technical knowledge of concrete structure, tools, and equipment.
- Experience with line and grade.
- In-depth knowledge and experience with various formwork systems.
- Knowledge of building construction, means and methods, scheduling, cost control, general contract understanding, general conditions, subcontract documents, drawings, specifications, and Trade practices.
- Knowledge of continuous improvement methods and tools.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and project schedules.
- In-depth knowledge of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) practices.
- Conceptual ability to work with minimal information and develop understanding of requirements.
- Proficient project management skills, able to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Leadership management skills with ability to forge relationships.
- Professional verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills and Microsoft Office suite.
- STSC certification is required and must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
Physical Demands:
Employees may be required to sit, use hands, tools, or controls; reach with hands; talk and hear. Employees will frequently view computer monitors and use keyboards. Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Physical ability to climb stairs, ladders, and negotiate construction areas is required. Employees must be mobile and travel regularly. Employees must be able to lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment:
Employees perform work on-site at construction sites, office locations, and/or off-site venues. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, high places, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, and electrical shock risk is possible. The noise level is usually moderate to loud at construction sites and quiet to moderate in offices. Compliance with company safety policies and procedures is required.
