About the role

Software Developer – Bioinformatics (ETL / Object-Oriented Programming)

Remote (U.S.) | 6-Month W-2 Contract | $55-$63/hr

We're hiring a Software Developer to support an established bioinformatics team by maintaining and enhancing existing data workflows. This is a hands-on development role where you'll work with ETL processes, databases, and object-oriented code to improve an existing platform.

Bioinformatics or pharmaceutical industry experience is not required. We're looking for a strong developer with experience working within existing applications and codebases.

What You'll Do

  • Enhance and maintain existing ETL workflows within an established platform.
  • Update and move data through existing data pipelines and workflows.
  • Develop and maintain object-oriented code as part of an existing application.
  • Work with both relational and non-relational databases.
  • Contribute to an established codebase by enhancing and modifying existing functionality.
  • Collaborate with the project lead and development team while owning individual development tasks.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or another STEM-related field.
  • Hands-on experience developing and maintaining ETL processes.
  • Experience working with both relational and non-relational databases.
  • Experience contributing to an existing application or codebase written by other developers.
  • Strong object-oriented programming (OOP) experience. This is a true software development role—not a scripting position.
  • Experience using GitHub or Git for version control and code collaboration.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to quickly learn new technologies.

Nice to Have

  • Bioinformatics or computational biology experience.
  • Experience with Nextflow or scientific data workflows.
  • Experience with Python or another object-oriented programming language.
  • Exposure to genomics, NGS, or other large-scale scientific datasets.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a developer first. Industry experience isn't required, but you should have a solid foundation in software development and be comfortable working with existing systems.

The ideal candidate has experience with:

  • ETL development
  • Relational and non-relational databases
  • Working within someone else's codebase
  • Writing clean, maintainable object-oriented code
  • Collaborating with a development team to enhance an established application

Important: This is not a scripting role. The hiring team is looking for a software developer with strong object-oriented programming experience who can contribute to an existing application and codebase.

Contract Details

  • Type: W-2 Contract
  • Duration: 6 months (project-based, no extension anticipated)
  • Location: Fully Remote (U.S.)
  • Pay: $55-$63/hour
  • Interview Process: Two virtual interviews with the hiring manager and technical team.
