This position facilitates patient care by performing the preliminary workup of patient exams, including taking patient history and conducting screenings and diagnostic tests per established protocols.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtain within three months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Completion of ophthalmic, optometric, or medical assistant training program and/or AAO Home Study Course.
  • Previous experience in an ophthalmic practice.
  • Experience with computer scheduling systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Obtain patient history including chief complaint and medical background.
  • Perform screenings such as visual acuity, lensometry, refraction, keratometry, pupil evaluation, eye pressure measurement, and drop instillation.
  • Assist with diagnostic tests and ocular imaging including OCT, Topography, Visual Fields, and IOL Master.
  • Prepare patient consent forms and assist with in-office procedures.
  • Set up exam rooms ensuring cleanliness, proper organization, and stock.
  • Clean and disinfect instruments, assist with equipment calibration and maintenance.
  • Facilitate clinic flow and document exam details in the Electronic Health Record.
  • Comply with all relevant regulations and standards in the Ophthalmology department.

Physical Requirements

The role requires close patient interaction, exposure to blood and hypodermic needles, physical assistance for patients including helping with wheelchairs, prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, and stretching.

  • Knowledge of eye terminology and basic eye anatomy and physiology.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients and the care team.
  • Strong attention to detail in busy, high-volume clinics.
  • Energetic, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
