Job Description

About TRM Labs

TRM Labs delivers advanced blockchain analytics and AI solutions, empowering law enforcement, national security agencies, financial institutions, and cryptocurrency businesses to detect, investigate, and disrupt crypto-related fraud and financial crime. Their platforms offer solutions to trace funds, identify illicit activities, build cases, and gain a comprehensive view of threats. TRM is a trusted partner globally, committed to creating a safer and more secure world.

The AI & Automation Team

The AI & Automation team at TRM focuses on designing and building AI-powered applications and agentic solutions that enable internal teams to operate at scale. This team collaborates directly with business leaders across the company to pinpoint high-impact opportunities, then designs, builds, and owns end-to-end solutions that significantly improve key business metrics.

The Role: Senior AI Automation Engineer

TRM Labs is seeking a Senior AI Automation Engineer passionate about working hands-on with modern AI technologies and building custom internal tools. This role offers a high degree of ownership and is ideal for engineers who want to remain deeply technical while also influencing the strategic direction of what is built, not just how it is built.

Impact You'll Have

  • Design, build, and own full-stack, AI-powered internal applications, encompassing backend services, APIs, data storage, and user interfaces.
  • Develop custom agentic solutions utilizing state-of-the-art AI models (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini) to automate workflows, enhance decision-making, and scale business processes.
  • Embed within internal teams (Intelligence, R&D, Operations, Talent, Finance, Legal) to thoroughly understand their goals, constraints, and key metrics, then translate these needs into technical solutions with clear success criteria.
  • Take end-to-end ownership of projects, including technical design, architecture decisions, scoping, delivery, iteration, and ongoing support.
  • Collaborate with non-technical stakeholders to expand their understanding of AI's potential and help shape more ambitious solutions.
  • Construct reliable, scalable systems that are utilized across the organization and are integral to TRM’s operations.
  • Continuously evaluate impact, iterating on solutions quarter-over-quarter based on measurable business outcomes.
  • Contribute to a fast-moving, high-ownership engineering culture that prioritizes quality, velocity, and real-world impact.

What We're Looking For

  • 6+ years of full-stack software engineering experience in building scalable web applications, services, and APIs.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and/or Python, with comfort across the stack including frontend development (React or similar frameworks).
  • Experience building robust backend systems, utilizing various datastores (such as Postgres/pgvector, Pinecone, Redis), and designing effective APIs.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and hands-on experience with AI tools and applications, including modern AI models, agentic IDEs, or building AI-enabled workflows/prototypes.
  • Experience building or experimenting with custom-developed agentic systems, workflow orchestration tools (e.g., n8n), or agentic browser automation.
  • A high degree of ownership and initiative, with the ability to operate independently within ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally and building trust with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

Bonus Points

  • Direct experience integrating automated AI Evaluation/Testing/Observability suites to continuously test model effectiveness, leveraging platforms such as DeepEval, Langfuse/LangSmith or similar.

About the Team

The team operates on a weekly sprint schedule, with individuals leading projects as technical anchors, fostering growth and ownership. They collaborate closely with internal stakeholders to deliver impactful features to internal customers and the company. The team's culture emphasizes psychological safety, building rapport and trust, accountability, extensive collaboration, and fun. The team’s timezone includes a mix of EST and PST, ensuring at least 6 hours of overlap with PST (8 am to 2 pm PST). An on-call rotation specific to internal tools is in place, where engineers triage customer support requests from relevant Slack channels.

Life at TRM

TRM is dedicated to building a safer world, a commitment reflected in their daily work. They operate at high velocity, valuing clarity, follow-through, and impact. Individuals who thrive here are energized by challenging problems, experimentation, and direct feedback, often shipping solutions in days rather than months. TRM expects every team member to achieve AI fluency, using AI to accelerate and reimagine their craft, aiming to be among the top 10 percent of operators in their function for applying AI to accelerate workflows, structure problems, improve output quality, and increase speed. Candidates will be evaluated on applied AI fluency during the interview process.

Leadership Principles

  • Impact-Oriented Trailblazer: Prioritize customers, move with speed, focus, and adaptability, treating plans as experiments to test, ship, measure, and iterate quickly.
  • Master Craftsperson: Value craftsmanship, balancing speed with high standards, owning outcomes end-to-end, and investing in continuous improvement.
  • Inspiring Colleague: Add clarity and energy, bring humility, candor, and a one-team mindset, providing and receiving feedback to strengthen the team.

Join Our Mission

TRM seeks individuals who want their work to matter, experiment with speed and rigor, and take pride in contributing to a safer world. If you are excited by TRM’s mission but don’t meet every qualification, they encourage you to apply, as they hire for potential, judgment, and a willingness to learn fast.
