About the role

About the Role

As a Sr Application Engineer, you will be a technical expert in application and/or systems engineering. You will provide design recommendations aligned with long-term IT strategy and expertise in integrating applications across the business. Your responsibilities include defining specifications, planning, designing, and developing business-critical software solutions using appropriate engineering processes, either independently or with a product team.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Designing Solutions: Apply technical knowledge to drive customer outcomes and independently solve problems aligned with software engineering strategy.
  • Developing Software: Work collaboratively to develop core product software, ensuring stability, scalability, and resilience.
  • Learning and Applying New Techniques: Share new ideas and techniques, encouraging junior engineers to prioritize learning.
  • Collaborating within the Team: Provide technical expertise in team collaboration sessions to solve problems and remove roadblocks, participating in product planning and implementation.
  • Defining Engineering Standards and Patterns: Contribute to developing engineering practices, templates, and frameworks in collaboration with the team.
  • DevOps: Continuously assess technology to build stable, scalable, and resilient software, measuring progress with data. Promote CI/CD pipeline use for improved deployment and build processes. Participate in team support rotations and provide expert knowledge on focus subsystems.
  • Selecting & Managing Technology Vendors: Contribute to defining vendor selection criteria and participate in proof-of-concept initiatives with vendors.
  • Coaching Engineers: Guide junior engineers in foundational software engineering skills, provide technical expertise to solve issues, and offer training and domain expertise on software products.
  • Recruiting/Building Talent: Engage in the tech community to build Thrivent's technology brand, participate in the interview process, and contribute to defining the recruitment and interview structure. Model Thrivent’s leadership competencies, support continuous improvement, and shape a culture aligned with Thrivent’s purpose and values.

Qualifications & Skills

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 7+ years of Mainframe experience in engineering environments.
  • Proven ability to translate abstract concepts into detailed software engineering plans.
  • Sound knowledge of industry-standard Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) practices.
  • Sound knowledge of version and revision control practices and procedures.
  • Sound knowledge of systems design concepts for security and stability.
  • Expertise in debugging code and complex log files for troubleshooting and defect analysis.
  • Expert knowledge/experience with querying databases for complex data lookup/update.
  • Experience performing code reviews with team members.
Preferred:
  • Financial Services or Insurance industry experience.
  • Coaching/mentoring other team members.
  • Java Object-Oriented Programming experience.
  • Wealth Management Accelerator (WMA) experience is a plus.
