Job Description

Background

The World Bank Group's Institute for Economic Development is building AI tools and agents—spanning knowledge curation, research synthesis, and co-creation with practitioners. Here's what makes this interesting: unlike traditional software, these systems generate their own interfaces. The AI decides what to show based on context—a diagnostic flow, a policy recommendation, a data visualization. We need someone who can think through what that means for users.

Objective

Design interaction patterns and component systems for IED’s AI agents, ensuring they surface insights effectively while keeping users in appropriate control.

Scope of Work

  • Define the UI component vocabulary our agents can use—what components exist, when each is appropriate, what props they accept
  • Establish patterns for voice-to-visual handoffs (a voice conversation about survey design might need to become a visual flow builder)
  • Design interaction flows for key use cases: behavioral diagnostics, policy recommendations, research synthesis
  • Advise on agent autonomy decisions—when should the agent act vs. ask? When does "helpful" become "presumptuous"?
  • Work with engineers to pressure-test designs against technical constraints (streaming latency, context limits)

Deliverables

Flexible based on project needs. May include: component specifications, interaction flow diagrams, design guidelines, prototype reviews.

Qualifications

Required:
  • You've designed conversational or voice interfaces and know where traditional UI paradigms break down
  • You're familiar with AI/LLM-powered products—you understand that these systems are probabilistic, not deterministic
  • You can work in ambiguous contexts where you're helping define the problem, not just solving a well-specified one
  • Applicants must have existing authorization to work where they are based
Preferred:
  • Experience with declarative UI systems where you think in components and state
  • Exposure to agent-driven or generative UI patterns (A2UI, AG-UI)
  • Previous work in research, policy, or international development contexts

Duration and Schedule

Level of Effort: Up to 20 daysPeriod: 01 March 2026 - 30 June 2026, with possibility for extensionLocation: Remote
