About the role

Senior Electrician

The Senior Electrician provides advanced journeyman-level installation, maintenance, and service of electrical systems. Responsible for the prompt performance of assigned electrical and related duties. Includes assisting the Supervisor in supervising semi‑skilled and skilled staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and electrical journeyman’s license.
  • Seven (7) years of experience as a licensed electrical journeyman.
  • This position requires you to have and maintain a Texas Class “C” Operator’s Driver’s License and three (3) years of acceptable driving history.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Must be familiar with NFPAA 70, 101.
  • Master Electrician’s License.
  • Two (2)+ years of lead or supervisory experience.
  • Experience on large university campuses.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Work Order System: Maintain the automated work order system, including issuing work orders, ensuring work completion, communicating with faculty and staff regarding needs and scheduling, and ordering necessary materials.
  • Underground Electrical Installation: Install and repair underground electrical conduit and wire for pole lighting and services, involving trenching, laying out locations, repairing conduits, tracing damaged wires, and locating underground electrical.
  • Service Installation and Upgrades: Install new electrical services to buildings and extend existing ones, including removing old feeders, trenching, and sizing/pulling new feeders per NEC.
  • Switchgear and Panel Work: Remove and install new switchgear, and replace breakers in switchgear and panels.
  • Cost Estimation: Estimate costs for electrical work, requiring knowledge of electrical materials, building practices, and the National Electrical Code.
  • System Maintenance and Repair: Install, maintain, and repair transformers, generators, control panels, switches, circuit breakers, outlets, fixtures, fittings, and accessories. This includes luminary installation, working on energized parts, tracing circuits, installing and testing generators and ATS, and installing new outlets and switches in remodeled renovations.
  • Renovation Projects: Manage the demolition of existing electrical systems and installation of new ones for renovation projects across campus. This involves reading blueprints, tracking costs, writing change orders, communicating with Architects and Engineers, installing panels, outlets, switches, and luminaries, calculating loads, and installing conduit and wire for new feeders and branch circuits.
  • Supervisory Assistance: Assist the electrical supervisor with daily operations, including supervising electrical personnel, overseeing campus electrical operations, and providing training and mentorship. Ability to assume the supervisor’s role in their absence.
  • Emergency Response: Respond to on-call electrical emergencies outside of normal hours, such as fires, outages, floods, and icy conditions. This requires knowledge of campus electrical distribution, problem identification, action planning, communication of severity, and resolution.
  • Research Equipment Support: Install new electrical systems for research equipment and assist other departments with troubleshooting and installation of new equipment.
  • Special Events Support: Assist with electrical installations for various campus events, including concerts, move-in days, homecoming, graduation ceremonies, and sporting events.
  • Ongoing Training: Complete and maintain yearly training, including electrical continuing education, hazardous communication, security, driver education, first aid, asbestos, boom lift, scissor lift, bucket lift, NFPA 70, and forklift certifications.
  • Vehicle Operation: Drive a UTA vehicle.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
