Overview
The University of British Columbia seeks a Director, Energy & Water Services to lead the planning, operation, and maintenance of utility infrastructure at the UBC Vancouver campus. This role supports the university’s Climate Action Plan and the Campus as a Living Laboratory program.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership for campus energy and water systems including electrical, natural gas, hot water, steam, potable water, storm water, and sanitary sewer services.
- Develop and implement long, medium and short-term utility infrastructure plans.
- Manage an annual operating budget (approx. $55M) and oversee capital planning.
- Supervise approximately 75 employees including unionized staff and management professionals.
- Collaborate with various internal departments and external partners including government bodies and utility organizations.
Organizational Context
This role reports to the Associate Vice-President, Facilities and is a key member of the Facilities leadership team. The Director is crucial to ensuring safe, reliable, and sustainable energy and water service operations in a complex, unionized environment.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in architecture, engineering, community planning, or related field.
- Minimum of twelve years experience in management and capital budgeting.
- Professional memberships and, preferably, professional engineering designation from Engineers & Geoscientists BC.
- Strong leadership skills and ability to manage large-scale projects and budgets.
