About The Volunteer Treasurer Role

Join The Power of Play as a Volunteer Treasurer on the Board of Directors. This role is key in overseeing the organization’s financial health and legal compliance, ensuring that every child has access to transformative play experiences.

The Power of Play is a Canadian charity that uses upcycled, sustainable materials to design and build playgrounds in remote and underserved communities globally. We promote inclusivity, creativity, and safety, thereby building a more peaceful world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership & Governance: Shape mission and strategic planning, advise on policies, lead board finance committee.
  • Financial Oversight: Contribute to budgeting, financial planning, risk assessment, and prepare financial reports.
  • Compliance & Controls: Ensure financial controls are in place, manage donation receipts, and file tax returns.
  • Board Collaboration: Work with the CEO, finance team, and external consultants; attend governance training.

Time & Term

This is a three-year term commitment requiring 12-15 hours monthly, including twice-monthly virtual meetings.

Financial Contribution

Board members from developed nations are encouraged to contribute $1,000 annually, with adjustments for developing nations.

Requirements & Skills

  • Background in accounting or financial services
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Experience in consolidating and interpreting financial data
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, MS Office (Word, Excel) and other databases

Preferred Experience

Knowledge of public expenditure, Canadian charity law, GAAP, previous board or not-for-profit service, and international development.
