Job Description

Senior Video Journalist - The Interview

The New York Times is seeking a Senior Video Journalist to join The Interview, a weekly show featuring conversations with influential figures across various fields. This role involves shaping smart conversations across audio, video, and digital formats, with a focus on rigorous scripting, stylish execution, and compelling post-production.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the executive producer on editorial and workflow priorities.
  • Script, produce, edit, and publish episodes across multiple formats (audio, video, text).
  • Guide producers on all aspects of episode production, including shoot coordination and logistics.
  • Work closely with hosts on interview framing and scripting, both before and after.
  • Direct hosts during interviews as needed.
  • Collaborate with the podcast video team on implementing and refining edits.
  • Contribute to guest selection, considering variety, news value, and conversational depth.
  • Edit both tight-turnaround and long-term productions.
  • Manage simultaneous scripting and finalization of episodes.
  • Work with the newsroom audience team on social clips to grow audience engagement.
  • Develop producers, including those with audio backgrounds.
  • Experiment with new formats and ideas for the show.
  • Demonstrate commitment to journalistic independence and the mission to seek truth.

Basic Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in video production.
  • 5+ years of story editing experience, especially with conversations.
  • Experience collaborating with hosts and on-air talent.
  • Demonstrated news judgment and broad cultural interest.
  • Deep understanding of social media and video trends.
  • Command of various visual devices: original footage, motion graphics, archival footage.
  • Understanding of mainstream and emerging social channels.
  • Strong organizational skills: supervising journalists, directing crews, managing freelancers.
  • Proven experience in a deadline-driven environment.

  • Appreciation for magazine journalism and The NYT Magazine.
  • Ability to identify and solve story structure and editing issues.
