About The Role

The New York Times Editing Center, a 35-person remote editing and production team, is seeking an experienced Photo Editor. This role involves selecting, editing, and captioning images for distribution to clients globally. Working in a fast-paced, global news environment, you will operate on a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, which is crucial for contributing to The Times' mission of innovation and growth. Shifts and specific days will be determined, as the Photo department is staffed seven days a week, typically from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET on most weekdays. This is a remote position reporting to the Manager, Photo.

Responsibilities of a Photo Editor

  • Select and edit New York Times photos for global distribution, strictly adhering to Times standards.
  • Process graphics and illustrations for distribution.
  • Prioritize breaking news and features with strong news judgment.
  • Write concise and complete captions for images.
  • Select images for various Times publications, including Times Digest and International Weekly.
  • Communicate effectively with Syndicate editors for photo selection and editing, ensuring all rights issues for photographers and contracts are verified.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, seven-days-a-week environment with constant deadlines.
  • Be willing to work nights, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to journalistic independence and the mission to seek truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience as a photo editor for a wire service or news publication.
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related subject.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong news judgment and deep understanding of current world events, including how The New York Times covers them.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects under tight deadlines with clarity and consistency.
  • Excellent copy-editing skills and proficiency in AP style.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Proven success in remote work environments, including troubleshooting technical issues and collaborating effectively across virtual teams.
