Overview
The New York Times is seeking an exceptional Open-Source Reporter Visual Investigations to join our Visual Investigations team. You will be responsible for sourcing, analyzing, and presenting visual evidence to uncover new insights and hold power to account.
Responsibilities
- Source audio-visual evidence from multiple platforms.
- Geo- and chronolocate evidence and analyze satellite imagery.
- Pitch reporting ideas and coverage opportunities.
- Collaborate with video editors and motion-graphics producers.
- Work on breaking news stories independently or with a team.
- Support journalistic independence and the mission to seek the truth.
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of journalism experience, ideally in digital video or broadcast.
- Proven open-source research and investigative skills.
- Strong writing skills under tight deadlines.
- Experienced with tools like Google Earth Pro, satellite imagery, and tracking platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with original angle development on competitive news events.
- Familiarity with video production processes.
- Programming skills or fluency in a second language.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends if needed.
This is a full-time hybrid position based in New York with regular in-office attendance as guided by the department. The role is represented by the NewsGuild of NY. Salary range is between $113,270.67 and $136,000 USD. The New York Times values diversity and equal opportunity.
