About the Role
The New York Times Newsroom Operations team is seeking a News Assistant to support the International desk. This role involves varied logistical and operational tasks, requiring an engaged and collegial team member with a strong interest in news. While direct reporting is not a primary responsibility, excellent writing skills and a passion for international news and Times journalism are essential, as occasional research and reporting assistance may be needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Internal document creation and maintenance (trackers, contact lists, Airtables, calendars).
- Research and produce daily news scans.
- Proofread and fact-check audience-related tasks, including SEO and URL verification.
- Maintain a structured tagging system for content discovery and reporting.
- Ensure seamless communication between editors, reporters, photographers, and freelancers.
- Assist with breaking news coverage and other emergent responsibilities.
- Assemble binders and packets for meetings.
- Run errands, including picking up supplies.
- Coordinate domestic and international mailing, shipping, and delivery of sensitive documents.
- Help set up and break down team events.
- Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and the company's mission.
Basic Qualifications
- 1+ years of experience with Google Workspace.
- 1+ years of experience in a role requiring operational skills.
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Versatile writing skills with strong grammar.
