Library Information Assistant - Francis Martin Library
The New York Public Library (NYPL) is seeking a passionate and creative customer service expert to join the Branch Libraries team as a Library Information Assistant at the Francis Martin Library. This role is crucial in transforming our neighborhood libraries into vibrant community hubs that offer more than just books, focusing on educational innovation and service.
About the Role
As a Library Information Assistant, you will be responsible for providing exceptional service to patrons of all ages. You will assist with information queries, manage circulation services, and support outreach and programming activities. Your role will involve helping people explore resources, discover new interests, and engage with the library's offerings.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide circulation and reference services, including instruction on using print, media, and digital resources.
- Answer patron inquiries in person, over the phone, and electronically.
- Conduct community outreach to promote library services and increase public participation.
- Assist in planning and delivering engaging library programs for children, teens, and adults.
- Instruct patrons on the use of the Internet, computer applications, and other library services.
- Manage fines and fees, assist with collection development and weeding, handle reserves, and perform opening/closing procedures.
- Ensure patrons adhere to library policies and procedures.
- Potentially oversee the facility, staff, and operations in the absence of the Library Manager.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Required Education, Experience & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with a strong liberal arts background.
- Demonstrated public service experience with the ability to serve a diverse patronage effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- A passion for literature and a desire to encourage reading in others.
- Strong organizational and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Proficiency with computers and technology, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google applications, PCs, Macs, and e-reader devices.
- Knowledge of computer services such as on-line searching, social media, and reference databases.
Work Environment and Core Values
This is a public service library role. We value being Helpful, Resourceful, Curious, and Welcoming and Inclusive. The role may require moving up to 15 lbs and remaining in a stationary position for periods of time. Daily computer use is expected.
