Job Description
Student Assistant Specialist - Journalism + Design
The Journalism + Design (J+D) program at The New School is seeking a motivated student worker to assist in implementing a community engagement strategy. This role is crucial for fostering a strong internal community that supports students and alumni, with a particular focus on disseminating job and internship opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a community assistant for the online J+D Slack workspace.
- Provide support to students, faculty, and alumni using the J+D Slack platform.
- Track the Journalism + Design editorial calendar.
- Publish the Journalism + Design email newsletter.
- Plan, produce, and publish content for Journalism + Design social media accounts.
- Respond to replies and direct messages on Instagram and other social platforms.
- Experiment with and develop presence on platforms where J+D has underdeveloped reach.
- Collect and analyze data from these engagement efforts to suggest strategic improvements.
- Attend a weekly check-in meeting with faculty advisors.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to work independently under faculty direction.
- Comfortable with public posting and online communication.
- Enthusiastic about community building.
- Committed to principles of equity and inclusion.
- Experience with publishing and messaging tools, particularly Slack.
- Willingness to learn new tools and approaches.
- Organized with effective collaboration and system organization skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines and proactively seek assistance when needed.
- Availability for approximately 10 hours per week.
Work Arrangement
This is a hybrid position. Employees will primarily work remotely, with occasional on-campus presence required with advance notice. Discretion is expected for on-campus presence when necessary to fulfill job responsibilities.
Compensation
Hourly Rate: $16.50
