General Responsibilities
The Provenance Researcher will apply a sound understanding of ancient art collecting history to review historic ownership of selected pieces from The Met’s collection. This responsibility involves close collaboration with curatorial, Director’s, and Counsel’s offices.
Primary Responsibilities & Duties
- Systematically capture and record provenance data from internal resources.
- Research provenance using physical & digital archives and secondary literature.
- Contact archives, art dealers, auction houses, donors, scholars and researchers.
- Document research and sources in The Met’s collections management system.
- Collaborate with curators and archivists to expand provenance documentation.
- Assist in maintaining object files and public provenance information.
- Support research on cultural property claims and provenance for acquisitions.
Requirements & Qualifications
- MA or PhD in Art History, Archaeology or Museum Studies.
- 5 years’ experience in provenance research and guidelines application.
- Strong organizational skills and swift, confidential data processing abilities.
- Familiarity with art market influences over last 100 years.
- Experience with collections management systems including provenance documentation.
- Preferred familiarity with Spanish language and established research networks.
Compensation & Benefits
Pay Range: $100,000.00 - $125,000.00 Annually. The Met offers competitive salaries along with robust benefits including medical, dental, vision, retirement plans, paid time off, commuter benefits, and staff discounts.
Location Requirements
Candidates must be located within commuting distance of the Museum (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania) to report on-site.
