Job Description

Library Assistant - Access Services at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)

LSE is committed to building a diverse, equitable and truly inclusive university.

The Library is at the heart of LSE, one of the world’s greatest social science universities, and serves a vibrant community of students and staff in the centre of London. It has a high reputation both nationally and internationally for its extensive collections, its involvement in innovative projects and its high quality services.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic individual to join a team in Access Services in the Library providing help and support to staff, students and visitors. Access Services provides many of the front of house and first point of contact services for the Library and consists of two teams, Enquiry Services and Reader Services.

Role Overview & Responsibilities

This role is in Enquiry Services. You will help manage incoming enquiries whether by phone, email, or chat and provide in person support through the Reception and Enquiries desk and roaming service, liaising with other teams both within the Library and the School to refer enquiries where necessary. You will assist the Enquiry Services Manager with space management, signage and fault reporting.

The successful candidate will be trained as a Safepod Coordinator performing security checks and check in/out of researchers. All applicants understand that they may have to undergo stringent background and identity checks. Refusal to consent to this may lead to a refusal of the role.

The role will involve some cross team working and there will be opportunities to contribute to the wider work of the Library through involvement with project and working groups.

Candidate Profile

You will be educated to ‘GCSE’ level or equivalent. You should be an excellent communicator with a proven ability to relate to a wide range of users and academic colleagues. You will be well organised and self-motivated with experience of team working and an ability to take initiative and solve problems. Experience of working in Customer Service environments is essential.

This is a front-facing role with a requirement to be on site to deliver services.

Benefits & Application

We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave, hybrid working, and excellent development and training opportunities.

Supporting statements should be no longer than two sides of A4 and must follow LSE’s ‘how to apply’ guidelines.
