The Data Scientist at The Home Depot supports data science initiatives aimed at enhancing business profitability, increasing operational efficiencies, and improving the overall customer experience. This role involves applying industry-leading analytical methodologies to large datasets, extracting meaningful business insights, and creatively solving complex business problems. A key responsibility is to ensure that all developed code is well-documented and contributed to a library of reusable algorithms. Depending on the specific data science team, this position requires knowledge in one or more specializations, such as optimization, computer vision, recommendation systems, search, or Natural Language Processing (NLP).
As a Data Scientist, you will utilize advanced analytics methods and algorithms to identify trends and deliver effective business solutions. You are expected to present intricate insights and recommendations to non-technical audiences, clearly articulating the benefits and potential impacts of proposed solutions. Collaboration with business partners and cross-functional teams is integral to this role, requiring strong communication skills, relationship building, and a deep understanding of the business area being supported.
Key Responsibilities
- Solution Development (55%): Design and develop algorithms and models for large datasets to create actionable business insights. Participate in major data analytics projects as a technical lead, potentially leading smaller projects independently. Execute tasks with high efficiency and quality, making appropriate selections and interpretations of advanced analytical methodologies.
- Communicating Results (20%): Effectively convey insights and recommendations to both technical and non-technical leaders and business partners. Present recommendations confidently to influence execution and prepare clear reports, updates, or presentations on project progress and solution impacts to drive alignment.
- Business Collaboration (10%): Integrate business knowledge into solution approaches. Build trust and foster collaboration with internal customers and cross-functional teams. Work closely with project teams and business partners to define project goals.
- Technical Exploration & Development (15%): Continuously seek knowledge on new developments in data science, technical skill sets, and additional data sources. Contribute to the continuous improvement of data science and analytics by developing replicable solutions (e.g., codified data products, documentation, process flowcharts) for future leverage. Build and maintain a library of reusable, documented algorithms.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be eighteen years of age or older.
- Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent in a quantitative field (e.g., Computer Science, Math, Statistics).
- 3 years of work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a quantitative field (Computer Science, Math, Statistics, etc.) or equivalent work experience.
- 4+ years of experience in business intelligence and analytics.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience in a modern scripting language (preferably Python).
- Proficient running queries against data (preferably with Google BigQuery or SQL).
- Proficient with data visualization software (preferably Tableau).
- Proficient utilizing statistical techniques to identify key insights that help solve business problems.
- Knowledgeable in Prescriptive Modeling like optimization, computer vision, recommendation, search or NLP.
- Demonstrated experience in predictive modeling, data mining, and data analysis.
