Job Description

Information Technology Assistant - Hourly

The City University of New York (CUNY) is seeking an entry-level IT Assistant to support the Telecommunications and Field Support Manager within the Office of Information Technology (OIT) at the City College of New York. This role involves day-to-day operations of the Cabling Team and contributes to college-wide IT initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including PMO, network services, system administration, audio-visual technology, and front-line services.
  • Mount wireless access points (WAP) and related components for reliable wireless connectivity.
  • Assist in repairing and expanding telecommunications cabling, ensuring installations meet design documentation.
  • Install cabling (coax, HDMI, CAT5e/6/6A cable) and equipment, including toning, testing, labeling, termination, and cable management.
  • Provide high-quality customer service by responding effectively to IT requests and incident tickets assigned to the Cabling team, resolving and escalating severe incidents.
  • Mount and secure devices such as cabinets, enclosures, racks, and panels.
  • Respond to reported cabling incidents and service requests, completing and escalating them in a timely manner with up-to-date information.
  • Monitor data center and IDF infrastructure, including power, cooling systems, security cameras, access control, and environmental conditions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Level 1: High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; OR an Associate’s degree and one (1) year of experience; OR a Bachelor’s degree and six (6) months of experience; OR a Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.

Level 2: High School diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; OR an Associate’s degree and two (2) years of experience; OR a Bachelor’s degree and eighteen (18) months of experience; OR a Bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field and one (1) year of experience.

Level 3: High School diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; OR an Associate’s degree and four (4) years of experience; OR a Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years and six (6) months of experience; OR a Bachelor’s degree in a computer related field and three (3) years of experience.

English Language Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to speak, read, write, and understand English at a level sufficient to meet performance standards.

CUNY defines full-time work as at least 35 hours per week. Part-time experience (20-34 hours/week) may be prorated by half.

Other Qualifications

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform full range of motion activities (walking, standing, lifting, climbing).
  • Knowledge of proper operation of power and hand tools.
  • Experience installing, terminating, troubleshooting, and maintaining voice, data, fiber, and A/V cabling.
  • Experience using test equipment such as network analyzers, cable toners, cable analyzers, and telephone test sets.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and service delivery skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation: New Hire: $30.99/hour, Incumbent: $34.99/hour.
