Job Description

What To Expect

The Document Classification Platform is Tesla's centralized engine for automated document processing and classification. We focus heavily on security, high availability, scalability, and performance to handle the massive volume of operational data. We build the microservices that power the lifecycle of critical business documents, handling everything from high-throughput email processing and dynamic document generation to intelligent routing via complex rule engines.

As a Backend Software Engineer on this team, you will design and deliver distributed systems that streamline information flow across the organization. You will move beyond traditional processing by integrating modern Vision Language Models (VLM) and NLP to classify documents, alongside deterministic methods like barcode recognition. You will work with modern architecture and AI agents to solve complex challenges that form the foundation upon which operations depend.

If you're passionate about high-impact engineering, automating complex workflows, and building intelligent platforms that matter, this is where you want to be.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop and support applications and systems under the team’s scope, including document generation, email processing
  • Write clean, maintainable, performant, and well-tested code to implement new features and fix bugs
  • Write unit tests, integration tests, and work with QA to coordinate timely regression for new features
  • Monitor live system metrics, respond to alerts, and troubleshoot production issues
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, and Business stakeholders to plan and prioritize new feature development
  • Own feature development and projects through design, development, testing, release and production
  • Understand and improve the scalability, maintainability, availability, and visibility of applications
  • Document newly implemented technologies and application functionality
  • Learn new technologies, practices and business concepts to solve new problems as Tesla grows
  • Work with technologies such as C#, .Net core, MySQL, Redis, Kafka, GraphQL, Python, NLP, React, Docker, Kubernetes

What You'll Bring

  • 3+ years of experience building scalable backend systems and microservices
  • Proficiency in Python, or C#. (Strong preference for Python experience regarding AI/ML integration)
  • Experience with AI/ML integration, specifically working with LLMs, Vision Language Models (VLM), or NLP pipelines for document classification and extraction
  • Expert knowledge of REST APIs and distributed system design patterns
  • Hands-on experience with Message Queue architecture (e.g., Kafka) for high-throughput processing (email/document ingestion)
  • Database proficiency with both SQL (e.g., MySQL)
  • Experience building complex workflow orchestration systems
  • Strong testing culture: Experience with unit, integration, and load testing for high-availability systems.
  • Collaborative mindset: Proficiency working in a high-impact, fast-paced environment with cross-functional teams
