As a Senior Satellite Communications System Engineer, you will be expected to have expert level knowledge and expertise in large scale space based "Systems of Systems". Preferably in the communications and networking domains, including development and deployment. You will be working within the Systems Engineering group and the focus of the work is the development of requirements specifications, design documents, CONOPs, and technical performance budgets of for development teams to expand and implement. You will be reviewing lower-level segments requirements and designs and verification plans. A generalist background with a specific area of expertise would be ideal for the required work. The domains of knowledge the group encompasses includes Space mission development, Satellite design, Satellite control, embedded software, RF digital communications, earth terminal design, network control.

The network is a global deployment of a multitude of satellites, various earth terminals, POPs, hubs, gateways and backbone trunks that customers access for enterprise grade data communications services. You will be working with system architects, RF engineers, antenna engineers, network engineers, software engineers and Earth Station engineers to partition functions between hardware and software domains and performing system level interface trade-offs to maximize performance. You will have experience working in a Systems Engineering environment and are familiar with the use of Systems Engineering products to facilitate the orderly progression from requirements through design, implementation, verification and deployment.

Main Responsibilities

  • Review subsystem designs to ensure compliance with system level specifications, interface documentation.
  • Perform system level simulations regarding RF link performance, availability, capacity, latency, etc.
  • Propose changes to requirements specifications to refine the overall system performance.
  • Make assessments regarding the development and deployment plans.
  • Derive and maintain top level specifications for use by subsystems and respond to requests to modify the requirements as necessary.
  • Create and review test procedures and plans as well as test results to ensure compliance with the specifications.
  • Characterize and analyze system performance.
  • Develop and maintain performance budgets on specific aspects of the system.
  • Provide technical support to regulatory, coordination, and market access teams.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior team members.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to the Telesat technical community.

Education And Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical, Aerospace, or Systems engineering or a related discipline with emphasis on some combination of digital RF communications, computer engineering and network engineering.
  • Extensive experience in the development and deployment at the Systems Engineering level in the following areas is essential: satellite mission development, RF and Digital Communications, large wide-area-networks (WAN & SD-WAN).
  • Experienced in formal Systems Engineering Methodologies, particularly space-based paradigms.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience relating to the defined responsibilities.
  • At least 5 years experience working in the satellite communications industry would be an asset.
  • Experience and expertise in Systems Engineering should be highlighted in the application.
  • Any industry recognized certificates of achievement relating to this position should be highlighted in the application.

Specialized Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Model Based Systems Engineering experience is an asset.
  • Familiarity with DVB-S2X/RCS2 family of protocols is an asset.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to present complex ideas to a more general audience.
  • Committed to excellent work products.
  • Able to manage several complicated issues simultaneously.
  • Experience with JAMA, Sharepoint, Confluence is expected.

The successful candidate must be able to work in Canada and obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods program (CGP).
