The Equity Sales Trading team is responsible for representing institutional clients in the equity marketplace. This involves providing research, generating trade ideas, identifying new market trends, executing trade orders, managing risk, and offering expert analysis on market conditions. This role reports directly to the Managing Director, Head of Canada Cash Equity Trading.

Role Responsibilities

As the Director - Institutional Equity Trader on the institutional equity trading desk, you will be primarily responsible for client facilitation, alongside other investor and corporate coverage duties. Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring all trading positions remain within approved limits, actively contributing to enhancing the Bank's profile and market share.
  • Staying fully informed on market data, economic information, key industry developments, and regulatory standards to maximize profitability through sound, well-informed trading decisions.
  • Developing and maintaining robust contacts with market participants, generating valuable content and trade ideas, and leveraging the broader TD Securities platform to strengthen our market position.
  • Liaising closely with other TD operations across Canada, Europe, Asia Pacific, and the U.S. to contribute to the Bank's overarching objectives.
  • Ensuring all transactions are meticulously documented and processed accurately and promptly.
  • Adhering strictly to the firm's procedures, both personally and at the desk level.
  • Communicating bank policies, information, and strategy effectively between the product head and relevant trading personnel.
  • Understanding and aligning all business dealings with approved Business Strategies (Strategic Business Reviews – SBR's).
  • Following Market Risk Policies and understanding approved Trading Strategies, ensuring all trading activity aligns with these.
  • Adhering to Credit Risk Policies and procedures, ensuring applicable sales and trading activity is in line with these.
  • Demonstrating strong governance, control, and risk management behaviors consistent with TD policies and practices.

Leadership and Team Development

This role also involves significant leadership and team management responsibilities:

  • Establishing an environment that promotes respect for individual employees and adheres to Bank policies and Guidelines.
  • Directing, training, and developing staff to meet challenges, achieve department objectives, and reach their full potential.
  • Working with Human Resources to recruit staff with appropriate skills and competencies, following Bank recruitment procedures and best practices.
  • Globally managing team performance, ensuring clear objectives and regular feedback.
  • Ensuring performance appraisals are conducted in line with firm policy and standards.
  • Providing leadership, direction, advice, and guidance to the team, fostering high levels of integrity, motivation, and morale.
  • Maintaining staff competence by addressing skill or knowledge gaps with appropriate training and development.
  • Initiating actions for continuous professional development for yourself and the team.
  • Demonstrating TD's Leadership Profile in all professional and personal activities.

Education & Experience

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:

  • 10+ years of related experience in institutional equity trading.
  • An undergraduate degree in Business (Accounting or Finance) or Mathematics/Economics.
  • Required Canadian and U.S. equity licenses, including Series 7 and 63 licenses.
